    Cool pecker head :)

Stumbled upon this pileated woodpecker yesterday, almost didn't notice him as I was stalking a flicker in an adjacent tree (no clear good shots of him though, just a few "through the branches" at crappy angles)

I think the first one is pretty good. The you got the focus right on the eye. With what there was to work with I don't know if you could have done any better, Jeff

Wow - and a pileated too!

Although the nest is high above you, the first one is very nice

    Re: pecker head :)

Thanks everyone, the first is my favorite too. I got a bunch of shots with various head angles and even several after he left the nest (pretty sure it's a "he" with the red forehead) including one in flight, but as usual it was like noon time, so harsh sun + cheap lens = lots of chromatic aberration and once he left the nest he was simply too high up and too far out to get anything worthy of posting.

That is one very cool looking woodpecker. Nice catch.
I sure hope you can get some more shots now that you know where he lives.

Congrats on the well earned feature. I still need a Pileated shot. I know there are a couple hanging around at a nearby state park, but I can never find them, although I can hear them from time to time. You done good and I am jealous.

I was talking to my Dad last night (who knows WAYYY too much useless trivia) and he informed me that although most people *think* Woody Woodpecker was a Pileated, he was actually based on the slightly smaller Acorn Woodpecker, and that's were the trademark laugh comes from too. LOL

Thanks for the kind words mn shutterbug

    LOL!!! Well that explains everything.

I'm going to lock that one away and cash it someday when I'm with birding friends and the time is right

    Thank your dad for me.
