Never underestimate the power of a cloud!

So I'm out yesterday morning in perfect light, no wind, and very few birds. I lazily decide to go after this Tricolored Heron that is just sort of hanging out without a care in the world. He's certainly not concerned about me. I've got the sun at my back, and I'm standing about knee deep in the water clicking away. Next thing I know, the most perfect light diffusing cloud passes in front of the sun and turns the water this incredible off-white color! These first two were taken as the sun was filtered by the cloud. As you can see, the water was perfectly still again (very unusual for here, but I love it!). The last image was captured just after the cloud passed. My only wish is that I would've had a bigger variety of birds around when it happened! No Photoshop trickery here....Just a good old natural filter. I loved the effect.

Maybe it comes from living where gray is the norm, but (though I like them all) I prefer the third one. - TF

No photoshop tricks at all on these....just a lucky break with the cloud cover. Nothing better than "Nature's" version of Photoshop

Very interesting Bob, I'll be experimenting with this myself when my camera finally comes back from the repair shop, its been six weeks now and I feel like I am missing a hand.

Re: Never underestimate the power of a cloud!

    congrats on FP.
although i agree i like the 3rd one the best, i think jsut cause blue skies are such a rarity here in pittsburgh ( its something like the second most overcast city in the us, after seattle i think). but the first two def are neat effects

Re: Never underestimate the power of a cloud!

Very good captures. I prefer the second one that was selected for the well deserved featured photo. I like the slight ripple in the reflection as opposed to the perfectly still mirrored reflection.
It's a good side by side comparison of straight sun and cloud over sun results. I do like a bit more warmth on the bird as in the last to bring out its colors, but I'm very fond of the artistic composition that was achieved by the gray/white water and strong smooth reflection.
    Well deserved.

Congrats on photo of the week Bob well deserved.

I'm not quite sure how to report a bug in the link.
When I click on the picture. I get NM shutterbugs thread.
    Another 'hatch and a 'dee
