Question Army Ceremony (B&W or Color?)

I took this at my older brother's ceremoony for finishing his training. I can't decide whether i want it in B&W or in color, or if it's even a keeper.

Re: Army Ceremony (B&W or Color?)

A keeper for sure. Ithink the photo and your post processing of it is very good. I like the b&w version best. The color is also good but the color of the sky takes away something for me there.
I like this alot.

Re: Army Ceremony (B&W or Color?)

I'm liking the color although the B&W is nice too. One issue I do have is the experssion on the fellows face partially blocked by your brothers head. Perhaps a little spot blurring?

Is it a keeper? What does your mother think?

Very nice photo either way. The color version looks like a Rockwell painting. Congratulations on the sticky, most deserving.

Re: Army Ceremony (B&W or Color?)

Personally, I think you've over done it on the post processing. Had this not been a photography forum I would have thought this was an illustration of some kind.

I'd like to see the original photograph, color and black and white, because it looks like a good photograph anyway..

This photo evokes such strong feelings I have had a hard time commenting. Amazing job, it's one of those "raw" feeling photo's to me.

I was informed that due to some main office movement, there may be some delays in putting up the featured sticky.

I too like the real world raw moment here and the graphic like processing just enhances it for me.

No, but hopefully soon. I will see about keeping your sticky up so that it gets the exposure it so deserves.
Our apologies. . .

Re: Army Ceremony (B&W or Color?)

I really like the colour, fantastic, how did you get this effect? Did you use a lens to soften the edges or was it done through pp? I am very new to this and after lots of advice.

Re: Army Ceremony (B&W or Color?)

Thank you, the effect was done through a lot of PP (mainly changing the blending mode to hard light - my favorite thing to do!), and if your talking about the darkened edges, then that was done through PP if you talking about the fact that the people beside my brother are slightly out of focus, that's because they were at a different distance from my camera and it had a shallow DOF because of a mixture of how close i was, my focal length, and my aperture (f stop)

Re: Army Ceremony (B&W or Color?)

I like the color better but both are fantastic. I think the pp work is amazing - it has a very dreamy sort of feel which i think is perfect for this. when my brother was done with basic, he said it all happened so fast, and was all so strange and foreign that the ceremony and the few days after were almost like a dream. Amazing and inspirational work!!

Re: Army Ceremony (B&W or Color?)

Both definitely work IMO. Interesting effect though you might crop off just a little off the top.

Note that to me, the expressions of the soldiers is what makes the shot, not the effect or the color. Good capture of the moment.

Re: Army Ceremony (B&W or Color?)

I think the colour version is best, but in my opinion its over edited and looks kind of fake in a sense. Is it possible to see the original?
