    Lake Havasu, AZ "Action"

Just returned from a week at Lake Havasu. Not a place I really care for but my kids really enjoy it, especially when my two sisters and their familys go. I'd much rather go to Yosemite and do some hiking. Well, I had the opportunity to get some action of the kids and adults on the wake board and tube.

I really want to extend my sports action to all aspects of sports and the action related to it. So give my your thoughts & comments, which are always appreciated.

I'd say you did pretty well with the action there Jim, especially the bottom one, those expressions are great  That one could be a POTW

I can't offer technical advice because I'm in the learning stages myself, but wanted to say I really like them. My personal favorite is the last capture of them falling off... great shot. Their expressions are fantastic. I take a lot of swimming photos and its hard in the full sun to not get blown out shots... at least for me. Care to share your settings?

Thanks JS, I'll have to post some of the mishaps and crashes. Some of those came out pretty good also.

    Thanks moviemaker.

For all of these I had the white balance set on auto and the camera set on aperture priority at f/2.8. The ISO was set at 100 which still gave me a decent shutter speed.

    Re: Lake Havasu, AZ "Action"

I'm torn between the 4th and last.
I think that as an image, the 4th just looks better.
But for a capture of the moment, I think the last has nailed it.
On the other hand the screwed up faces (is this going to hurt?) don't look attractive.

    Re: Lake Havasu, AZ "Action"

My feeling is the faces make the shot, it's the impending collision thats bring out the expression because both know it's going to be a hard hit. The only thing I don't like is the lone leg as it looks out of place, but then again things are getting out of control quick.

I just have to say fantastic shots. Your DOF is excellent, and the varying ways you have captured your subjects shows a talent for action photography. Keep up the great work.

    That lone leg is interesting.
Does it belong to a third occupant ?

The lone leg does belong to the girl on top and when that was over we two two girls sligtly crying. There was contact between the girls head (bottom) and the top girls shoulder once they hit the water. Nothing bad, just a little sore after the fact. They both got back on after a short break.

Well I'm glad no one had to have a leg re-attached and the other two were OK too, you can tell they were headed for a collision.
Nice catch though, have they seen this photo?

Oh, how I miss tubing I had the uncanny ability to never get knocked off

I'd have to agree, that last one is the best. The look on their faces is priceless

At the end of each day I would go through the shots and put together about a 10min slideshow showing the best shots of the day, which also included candids and shots of the kids jumping off a large canvas tupe in the lake. They have seen it.

I just finished putting together a slideshow, which I'll be putting to DVD for the familys. We will be getting together this Saturday for one of the kids birthday party and I'll show it then.

    Re: Lake Havasu, AZ "Action"

Looks like the last shot is getting the most feedback so I thought I add some additional shots of the falls. The worst thing that happened from any of the falls was the adult slightly bit his lip when his face met the water.

This last shot is of my 15 yr old son.

    Re: Lake Havasu, AZ "Action"

Kudos Jim for the great shots. Last summer I did something similar on a small lake here in VA. Beautiful skies, and I also shot Aperture Priority at 2.8. I got some shots I really liked that day, but for exhilration on the face, this one was the best. My daughter, not truly grasping the concept of a little air, nearly soiled herself!

#4: nice expression, A little touchup to bring out the face more and it's great, again, good timing Jim

    rgusberti,
Nice catch, too bad that foot is partly blocking the girls face, but you can't do much about that.
