These were taken with my D50 and Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 @ ISO 1600.

It's my first time panning and I could only be behind the fence.

Second shot is nice, I would try for more wheel blur in the rear wheel with a slower shutter speed. Good job on first try!

I'm going to go against the grain here & say that I like the second image as it is. I personally think that we dont have to have motion blur on every motorsport image we take.

With the attitude of the car & the dirt/dust/mud flinging around, stopping the action is a good choice. You get your drama & appearance of movement from what is happening because of the car, not just because we have a panning effect or motion blur on the wheels.

Anyhow, I like the image & well shot!!

Is there a happy medium? Like all photography, its a emotive thing that the each viewer may see differently. I think if you see something different about the photo, it has acheived its effect. What I mean, is if you look at the photo, you can see the dirt flinging out the back, you can see the folds in the tyres, the aggressive stance of the car gives the impression of the power slide. To me its achieved its effect.

Agreed. It does give the impression that it is moving along, without the panning effect. You can obviously tell it's not going slow as it gives the impression of sliding, also you can see in the front of the back wheel that it the path from the back tires spinning has not yet been created. The dirt and tire folds are the main giveaways though.
