    A Joust Anyone?

    OK, I'm pretty sure that these haven't been posted here in the Sports Forum.

    My apologies for those from the European community - we here in the US think these festivities are quite uncommon and quite entertaining

    BTW, the knight on the blue horse ended up getting knock off his horse.

    These are cool!

    We have a Ren Faire where I live. Every single year I'm out of town and miss it.

    Thanks for sharing these!

    Nice Loupey - our Ren Faire is coming in a week or two. Maybe I'll see those same jousters!

    Re: A Joust Anyone?

    Thanks, JM, JETA, and OBie, for looking!

    This was my first time going to this festival and I admit that I was a bit skeptical. Fortunately, the action was great. These two went through 2 sets of (lances?) before the one got knocked off. The broken pieces went flying into the crowds (we were forewarned) and one landed next to my wife and kids who were sitting near the "50 yard line".

    Unfortunately, the blue flag that they plopped down right in front of me keep me from seeing/shooting the jousts with the broken pieces flying

    I hope to go back in a few weeks. I will be taking my teles next time

    Re: A Joust Anyone?

    Great photos - and congratulations on the first post for this sport !
    Next time I'd really like to see the action of the breaking lances, or the loser being unhorsed.

    But I'm surpruised they are jousting without a shield, even a buckler, as defence against the lance was as much a part of the skill as unhorsing (not killing) your opponent.

    Nice looking armour, the horses are so lightweight it must be sheet metal. Stil heavy to wear and fight in, but you don't need a heavy horse (Suffolk, Clydesdale, Percheron) like you would with full thick plate.

    Re: A Joust Anyone?

    Wombat - did they really use draft horses to joust? It makes sense, of course, that you'd need a horse that can carry the heavy armor, but suddenly my visions of fast steeds galloping by each other is replaced with plodding heavy horses who have to be whipped into a trot

    I seem to remember the jousters I've seen here to carry shields. It's possible that Loupey's photos were taken after they 'lost' their shields in a prior run.

    Oh now I HAVE to go to our festival with camera in tow!

    Interesting factiod.

    Re: A Joust Anyone?

    SmartWombat, the M-C made it very clear that they used a "grid" (he actually had a specific term for it - I just wasn't listening) welded onto the shoulder/chest plate to keep the lance tip from sliding off target.

    As for the armour - I'm sure that these replicas are somewhat thinner to compensate for the "larger" knights (notice how the armour "bulges" around the middle )

    Very interesting about the horses used. I'd like to know more. And yes, I will go back and concentrate on just the actual joust the next time.

    Re: A Joust Anyone?

    The heavy horses were the real fighting horses, as armour thickness/weight increased.
    Later those breeds were put into use hauling heavy loads, and ploughing, which is what they're mostly remembered for.
    The jousting horse and the jousting armour I think both became lighter as the nature of the competition changed, becoming more stylised and less like real combat.

    Thanks for sharing!

    All that is gold does not glitter,
    Not all those who wander are lost;
    The old that is strong does not wither,
    Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
    From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
    A light from the shadows shall spring;
    Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
    The crownless again shall be king.
