which eye?

I've actually found this qite interesting how this can vary. Which eye do you shoot with? I tend to shoot with my left eye, so my right eye is staring into the back of the camera. I know it would be better if I could shoot with my right, because then I could open my eye and see whats goin on, but it just feels so unnatural. Anyone else?

I shoot looking through the viewfinder with my right eye and have my left eye on the action and that saved my rear once.

yeah, a lot of the time I watch the action through the viewfinder, and when I see the ball coming at me, drop the camera.

Amen to that! Especially shooting baseball. Knowing something about the sport you're shooting really makes a difference. Rh batters tend to foul off pitches to the 1b side, lh batters to the 3rd base side, etc. Still makes for some excitement though if you aren't paying strict attention. ;)

LOL, yup, I had a foul wiz by last season that I could feel and hear as it went past. The pitching coach walks past me later with a ball and puts it up near the lens and say "yup, would have fit perfectly".....I replied "OK, tell your son to chill, I won't submit any more photos of him striking out He laughed and said he forgot about that, but was certain his son hadn't!

JS, I had a game last year where I was sitting in the first base field boxes in blinding sun and couldn't see a foul ball hit off the bat. Nearly got skulled, and decided right there never to sit in that area with that kind of light. Also had an experience a couple of years ago where a bat went flying into the stands in the exact spot I had just been shooting. You need about 10 sets of eyes at a ballpark.

Right-handed and right-eyed. I actually can't see very well through the viewfinder with my left eye. I wear glasses and one eye has astigmatism and that might have something to do with it. I think my right eye is the poorer one, though. In any case, only the right one will work for me.

Usually, its my right eye, but it depends on what I'm doing. I've been known to use my left eye sometimes or shoot without looking through the viewfinder.

Always the right eye for me. Would love to learn to keep the left open, but it seem so unnatural to me. I've tried it several times and I just can't seem to get the hang of it.

Right eye - usually.

I sometimes use the left when the right is tired, but then I'm staring at the mode dial. With the right looking through the VF, I can track the action with the other one.

Also, I find it harder to concentrate with the left eye.

As another "right eye" shooter, I have learned to keep the left one open to avoid flying balls, feet, bodies, etc. My experience has been that it's usually the players away from the main action that present the most hazard since they're not in the field of view of the lens. Some of the most dramatic action shots I've taken resulted in a near miss from the rest of the play.

I shoot with my right eye, but I can and do sometimes keep both open. I was able to learn how to do that by shooting a rifle while target practicing. I keep both open when at baseball games. I was at a game and in left field during batting practice. I got distracted and was looking down. I heard the crack of the bat and looked up just in time to get hit in the face :frown5: . Right in the mouth. I split my lip open and bled pretty badly. That hurt ALOT... The real kick in the pants was that I did not even get the ball . Some kids grabbed it and ran laughing at me.... Oh well.....

No I pay attention to sports like that.....

Im a lefty all because of an eye injury when I was a kid. I had a total lens replacement in my right eye. I can see just fine its just I cant see to well up close with it.

Only prob with using my left eye is that my big nose keeps hitting the round focus button on my nikon:mad2:

I sit up in the press box with the scoreboard and PA system a lot for high school baseball games and am amazed how often someone watching the game ALMOST gets hit down the first base line by a right handed batter.. as someone who played during high school, it's NUTS to stand anyhwere that the fence isn't up to head level. Then again if yer trying to get that shot.. doing football games you can get run over and injured also if ya don't know the sport and can't anticipate the play.

When MLB gets to the playoffs those camera "wells" are so close to the field you'd almost want to beg for a screen with enough room to stick a lens through I'm sure?

I have been trying to shoot with both eyes open but have not been comfortable doing it.
Shooting sports or working my other job my peripheral vision goes into hyper mode and I am all ways looking out the corners of my eyes.

With a choice of being comfortable or uninjured I'll pick the latter and keep both eyes open especially at a race track or football game. I managed to avoid getting run over at football this year..... didn't want another shoulder operation, both of them hurt enough without taking another hit! I did see two photogs get creamed this year though, one who's been doing it for 30 years, the rest of the season he had a nice big outline of a helmet on his chest

Right eye in the viewfinder and left eye open.

My natural instinct is to close my left eye. After being tackled and sustaining a broken leg and concussion, I worked real hard on keeping my left eye open this season. I got hit from the left.
