a bicycle series (b&w)

My friend noticed this old bike, rotten and broken, attached very securely to an old lamp post near Harvard the other day. I snapped a few, trying to capture its solitary, lonely look. Black & white seemed its natural state, as well. Very shallow DOF, but maybe too shallow? Also, is it interesting?

Hi Stew,

I really like the gear shot. Not sure if the DOF is too shallow, I don't have an objection to it the way it is. It is very interesting... I think the B&W makes the shot.

Hey Stew,
I think your subject is interesting .An old weathered bike like this carries alot of mood and character. I am somewhat of a gearhead so I keep looking at the gear shot, but I really think the shot of the seat is the better of the two as it has lots of contrast, and really stands out nicely against the light bg. Also all the telltale signs of years of use and age are evident in the seat shot ( old springs, ripped seatseam, and the tear in the front part of the seat exposing the foam cushion) I do think the dof is a bit shallow, would be nice to see a bit more focus on the images. The shallow dof is losing some other interesting effects of these subjects.

I really like the gear shot - looks like an album cover shot or something of that nature. If it were mine, I might play with the levels to get the whites white and the blacks black (but that's just me). Other than that, I think it's well composed and needs nothing.

thanks

Thanks to all for your positive feedback! As I look at these more and more, I am now convinced that the dof needs to be a little deeper, and I was glad to get some corroboration from Gary on that one. If I get back there for some more shots, I'll repost... thanks again!

Good stuff!!!
I think the DOF works! And the B&W was the only choice for these images too!
I like bike stuff, so thanks for posting!

I'm glad this was chosen for the featured pic....I meant to comment on this series... I agree with Brian in saying that BW was a good choice and your vantage point and comp were right on... You have a great way of seeing things and I really enjoyed this set of shots

Thanks! I have never taken a pic of a bike, and it was fun.... I'll keep my eye out for more.

Cheers, Stew

I really like the dof in the saddle pic. But, I would like to see the entire saddle.

I quite enjoy your photos, however two pictures does not a series make. Jolly good show.
