Need a photoshop pros help, + a question...

I posted some of my recent trip pics on Flickr and now one of the shots has been requested to be blown up and printed for an auction for a part of an organization I belong too. It is pretty cool and I am excited about it.

The question is, do you think a picture taken with a Canon Digital Rebel Xsi 12mp, can be blown up to 11x17? Or would that just wash out all the details?

Also, there is a water spot on the picture, hardly noticeable but I can see it, (it was raining). Is there someone here who would be willing to photoshop that out for me? I would send you the full size file.

if its a good quality photo (ie you shoot at the highest settings, and its sharp and in focus etc) 11x17 should be no problem at all.... i've blown up and printed on canvas from 10.2mp d200 just fine, and 11x14 from my old like 6mp or less canon point and shoot.


as far as the water spot im not sure (just starting to dable in photoshop now) maybe try the dust spot remover??

Josh, I'll be happy to lend a hand with the spot, if you need it.

I also have Alien Skin's Blow-Up2 for doing enlargements. It's not a magic wand or anything, but it does a better job than PS usually does.

That said, if it's a Raw file, try going in to Camera Raw and raising the file size by one. I normally can do that without much loss of quality, and it's still better than doing the File Size method.

I've taken images shot with a Nikon D-1x all the way out to 44" x 100". When you look at the print from a normal viewing distance of about 10', it looks great. The D-1x was a 5.5 MP camera.

I think you can go bigger than that if the file size is big enough. Just upload it to MPIX and it will tell you just how big a print can be made and still keep quality. They make killer prints too.

You could try the healing brush on the spot. Or if you load it into Camera Raw (doesn't matter if it's actually a RAW file or not) you can use the Retouch tool. Really easy, just click in the middle of the spot and drag till the circle surrounds the spot and release. The tool will pick a nearby area it thinks is similar and you can move it if it's not correct.

I've printed a number of 10MP shots at 20x30 and they look great, even at closer inspection so I wouldn't worry too much as long as the original quality is there. If your original is blurry then it doesn't matter how many megapixels you use.
