    Higher Dynamic Range with JPEGS

There is a surprising degree of dynamic range in JPEGS which can be exploited using a kind of HDR technique.

I made this photo by combining a (1) low contrast high brightness version with a (2) high contrast low brightness version using layering.

Don - Is this HDR? If so (or even not), which software did you use to combine?

I only used one exposure. I used Paintshop XI to increase beta and lower contrast in, saved it. Then went back to the original and decrease beta and increase contrast. Saved the second image. The daeker image preserved the sky, the lighter preserved the shadow detail. I combined the two images in an old program I have called Photosuite 4. I adjusted the transparency of the images to make it work. It's the same basic technique as HDR but using only one JPEG image.

Smart idea. Glad to see that the results basically worked. I will have to try that technique myself soon! Thks for posting it.
