    Help

I have done pictures of charms for a friend.
The person that does their web site wants the pictures to be 100 pxls widest at 72dpi.

When I do that the picture is too small to see and when I enlarge it, it becomes a big blob.

I'm doing something wrong, I know but can't figure out what.

I'm bringing up the image reizizer in PSE 6, type in 100 as width.
The scale styles, constrain proportions, and resample image boxes are all checked.
I did read that when down sizing I should use the bicubic sharper option but that doesn't seem to make any dif at this drastic a reduction.

Here is a sample pic, downsized to 800

    Re: Help

First of all, I'd crop it tight to the charm. Then I'd resize in steps. That preserves detail. If you do it all in one wack, the resizing has to do too much and can't preserve any of the fine detail. For a 100 pixel thembnail I'd start by resizing to 2500 pixels. Then I'd resize to 1500 and use Usharp Mask (Amount 100, Radius 0.3, threshold 4). Then I'd resize to 1000 pixels, and again to 500 and use Unsharp Mask again at the same settings. Then I'd resize to 250 and Unsharp Mask Again, then once more to 100 pixels and one more hit with Unsharp mask.

That's pretty much my standard recipe for anything I post on the Web. Give it a shot and see if it works for you. A 100 pixel image is pretty small and there's no way it's gonna have a ton of detail. But if you follow my procedure, I think you'll get pretty good results. Please post it when you're done so we can see!

No problem! That just means it's also time for you to learn about actions and batch processing

Actions allow you to record a script that you can save and apply to any image file. Even better, you can use File > Automate > Batch to run an Action on a whole folder. And 119 image that need the same processing are absolutely what Actions and batch processing were designed for.

    Re: Help

I used the pict you provided, cropped and resized to 96x96 with 96 DPI using PS7.
The picture will be small because it's intended to be a thumb nail.

I set crop tool to 1in x 1in and cropped closer to the subject.
    Then, Image, Image size:
Set DPI first at 96 then set Image size height and width to 96
    Checked the resample image bicubic

Is this what you needed? It's probably not as sharp at PJ's steps but it's a heck of alot quicker.

    Re: Help

Looks pretty close to what I'd think they expect.

I know how to find batch processing but can't find anything to copy "actions" to all the photos?

In your PS users manual do a search for "Using droplets" you make a droplet to create the actions.

2 tips I can offer is once you resize to 100pixels / inch x 100 pixels / inch by 96DPI
use the Hand tool and select Actual Pixels to view. Don't select Fit on Screen. That will blow it up in to a giant blurry box.

Also the new thumb nail could display larger or smaller than what you expect but that is based on your current monitors resolution and is not the size that will display on the website.

I know this isn't helping much but it a free bump to the top of the list. Good Luck

    Re: Help

FWIW - dpi makes no difference - 100 pixels will be 100 pixels regardless of the resolution you set your file for. In fact, you can ignore that resolution setting most of the time. The only time I use it is if I'm sizing something for print and I want to see it at print size.
