    Corel Photo-Paint X5 Problems

What do you do when a good software app keeps crashing?

    Really
having a lot of problems running the newest version of Corel Photo-Paint X5. It locks up and requires restarting a lot, and I lose whatever work I had at the moment. There doesn't appear to be any particular thing I'm doing, and the Windows logs are pretty cryptic.

Wish I could say it's Windows 7 growing pains, but it was crashing a lot on Vista too before I upgraded computers last month.

I've also posted the Windows Alert error log info on a Corel site hoping a developer would answer - nothing yet after several weeks. There's no uninstalled updates.

    Re: Corel Photo-Paint X5 Problems

Just to put this out, I am now running Corel Photo Paint X5 in XP compatibility mode, and it seems to work a lot better.

I wonder if CS5 is having any crashing problems?

    Re: Corel Photo-Paint X5 Problems

I haven't crashed Adobe Photoshop CS-5 extended yet. Two Windows 7 machines and I've also been using it since Spring off and on a Mac platform.

Corel may still be running native 16-bit in a 32-bit emulation and needs less overhead to keep from timing out. On Windows 7 it would have do two or three operations to keep up with the OS. In an emulation mode such as for XP it would have less demands and could 'report/interrupt' back to system and not time out.

Corel hasn't kept up with some things as well as I'd hoped over the years. Sad as they were one of the kings of the hill not very long ago. Had the best WP/layout/publishing tools for many years.

    Re: Corel Photo-Paint X5 Problems

Rereading my posts, I spoke too soon - Corel X5 runs no better in 32-bit compatibility mode. It still refuses to save and eventually crashes after running it for awhile.

I totally agree, drg ... Corel has not kept up over the years and that is sad. They have a very nice product and I still favor it's layout over Adobe's, though much of that is probably due to my familiarity w/ it. The forum at Coreldraw.com has a lot of complaints regarding X5. I wonder if Corel has cut their staff down to the point where they can barely keep up with things? One thing's for sure though - they're having a hard time making it work with Win 7 64-bit.
