    Blinkies?

It occurred to me tonight that I really like the blinky feature on my camera (blown out high lights blink white and black).

I'm thinking of making an action to recreate this, but if it's a feature maybe I won't have to bother. I tried googling but came up short.

Are you talking about creating a Photoshop action to highlight the blown out areas on a photo? Adobe Camera Raw has a feature built into it that when turned on makes all of the blown out areas in a photo bright red. You can also turn on a feature that works for blocked up shadows. It turns any areas that are solid black to a blue color.

Personally I leave both of these features turned off. I find them to be quite distracting.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the histogram and image you see on the back of your camera is based on a processed JPEG file, even if you are shooting RAW. So just because you have blinkies on your cameras LCD screen, doesn't mean you are going to have them when you open the file in a RAW converter.

I understand that the in camera histogram is based off the processed jpg (is there anyway to base it off raw file??). But yes, I want to highlight blown out areas and shadows without information so that I can watch out for clipping details while processing the file.

What button/key do I hit to see the red/blue?

When you are in the Basic panel inside of Adobe Camera RAW press U to turn on the Shadow clipping warning and press O to turn on the Highlight clipping warning. Another way to turn them on and off is to click on tht little triangle in the upper right/left corner of the histogram.
