assigning 32bit as default vs 64bit?

I have a 64bit machine, but I have plugin's that only work in the 32bit versions of PS. I think I'd rather make the 32 bit version my default, but have no clue as how to do this other then maybe rename or move the exe files for the 64bit. I doubt that'd really help. Any advice?

If you are using Windows (hopefully Windows 7)
    - First be sure you are not currently running CS5.
Go to or navigate to the ..Program Files(x86)/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS5/ then
for the 32 bit version to launch Double click the Adobe Photoshop cs5.exe in this folder.

The 64-bit cs5.exe application resides in the Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS5/ folder. Note the lack of the x86 part of the file path. This is the one normally tied/linked to the shortcut Icon for CS5.
To change the shortcut link is a Right-Click Function and then point the icon toward the appropriate version from the above instructions.

On a Macintosh you will need to first select the Application/CS5 folder.
    Select the CS5 Application File.
The Choose File - Get Info and set/select Open in 32 bit mode and
    De-select Photoshop CS5 64 bit mode (the run-in option)

I've had some issues with getting some TWAIN drivers to properly function and Adobe has been a big help. There are several 'added' pieces that may not install under Windows automatically. There are also some 32-bit add-ons from Adobe that must be manually installed regardless if you want to use or try to use any of the

Thanks for the response. I do know how to access and run the 32bit version, reassign shortcuts and whatnot, but as far as getting the 32bit version to open from double clicking a file, or going in from bridge seems to be the main challenge. I know that if I'm in 32 bit that I can then open bridge from there, and that works, so that's a nice work around, but that's as close as I am to a fix. I suppose I could just uninstall and not install the 64bit, but I'd like to keep it available.

I haven't dug through all the 'manuals' either, but the program is a 64-bit native program. It isn't 32 or 64 bit. It is a 32 bit emulation in one way of looking at it, so the default install is for 64-bit.

If you uninstall CS5 and reinstall in in the 'custom' mode, then you should (and I haven't done it because I use the 64 version all the time) have an option to make the 32-bit the default start up. That's in Windows. That or just associate all you image files (TIFF, PSD, JPEG, RAW, etc) with the 32-bit version of the cs5.exe application. Kind of a pain I will admit.

I would recommend exploring the add-on features from Adobe that replace or upgrade or augment the 32-bit older 'pieces' to see if you really are stuck using that version. You might even want to use the Adobe online help or call them to see if they have another recommendation. They have been most helpful resolving 32-bit drivers. Even to saying, sorry that won't work!

For what CS5 is appearing to be optimized to do with the extra address space, I wouldn't want to have paid to handcuff the capability by running it as a 32 emulation under a 64-bit system. Certainly not for the read/write and display speed penalty that is inherent with that kind of bottlenecks. I like the faster version a lot when I've needed it thus far. I am even considering building a different variation of an i5 machine with mucho more memory.

There is an optional/accessory program or two in prior versions of Adobe Photoshop CSx that is a 'configuration' or 'options' setting utility that I haven't discovered yet.

With Mac versions it starts as optioned. And I bet the 32 bit version has a couple of real slow down points!
