William Eggleston @ the Whitney

I finally got out and went to see this exhibit today. The show takes up a whole floor at the Whitney - it's a great collection of Eggleston's work. I've always been drawn to his photographs of quotidian Americana - many of his earlier photographs evoke (in me) early childhood memories and experiences.

Most interesting about this exhibit, to me, is his current work. It's still in color, but it's a closer, more intimate view... and his dye sub prints have been replaced by iris (giclee) prints.

The show closes in several weeks, so if you're in NYC, do try to see it! (It will also travel throughout the US then to Germany, so it may end up in a museum near you.)

The National Gallery of Australia has a large collection of Eggleston's work.

20 years ago I went to see his museum collection at the NGA. The exhibition was called 'SNAPSHOT'. The images were only small images if I recall correctly, about 5x7 and 61/2 x81/2.

The NGA has a large collection of (what was called) Contemporary American Art. The US photographers feature most worthily.

Some things don't change. It was great to see the Eggleston vid.

I looked through the Eggleston Trust website and it didn't have the dates of other cities - so I guess you just have to check the museum calendars in your area to see if it's coming your way.

Let's hope it come to the greater SLC area then!
