Question: Technically, is a "portrait" defined as sitting/standing someone, deliberately posing them, using lights and so forth - kind of a formal thing.........or, are the more informal, candid shots, whether head/head and shoulders/full body -- also considered portraiture in the day-to-day world of photography??

I see both types here, and I just wonder if the pros make a distinction?
Sorry to have not answered earlier.
A portrait can be a formal or studio type shot or informal.
It should, I believe, emphasize the face and sometimes the upper torso but can include more.
The face should be the emphasis I think.

    So, yes, candid shots count.

Wonderful photos! They are all excellent. It's difficult to pick a favorite because they are each unique. The composition, color and and bokeh (gotta love that bokeh) are outstanding. Having said that, I think I would pick No. 2.

BTW, good bokeh is the only aspect I miss giving up my Canon lenses for the EP1. Although I must say I love the EP1.

You all take some nice pictures. I just play around for fun. I don't take pictures of people very well in pictures but I have a few pics that I like that were taken with my little casio point and shoot.
    The boyfriend
    Me
Little girl on the island of Brava in Cabo Verde, Africa (taken with a pentext point and shoot)
Lexi the cat who lived with us for a few months while his servants were on vacation.

    Re: December project...portraits

OK here we go again, if it works it is a self portrait, lighting was 4 - 20 watt makeup lights, I looked in the bathroom mirror to see the LCD and frame the shot.

I give up. :mad2: :cryin: Computers STINK !!

I resized the image to 800 X 800 stored it in Pictures, Opened this thread and selected the photo from Vista Pictures, and uploaded to here and got this again. The image in Pictures shows 800 X 800 size for a full head shot. Figuring out what is going wrong is way above computer my abilities.

If anybody can help I would appreciate it. BTW you can see the full thumbnail image on the IEXIF box.

Frog, you can delete or keep this one, It will probably be the most unusual portrait. I guess that is better than :cryin:

OK guys, I set the DPI to 72, the size to 800 X 600 on a new image and am going to try again.

WOW IT WORKED THANKS TO ALL!!!! It is not the exact image as the original, but a lot closer, the DPI was set at 0. again thanks.

    DPI means nothing in digital.

Since it was vertical, you should have made it 600x800 instead and it would have been closer. Better yet would be to set it so that, when you change one dimension, the other automatically changed. Then change the largest to 800 and the other will be OK. This won't crop any of the image.

Fun is important. More than one photographer has dropped the hobby/business because it wasn't fun anymore. Besides these are pretty nice and I especially like the cat even if it doesn't have any ears.
