December Project: Playing with Light

Ok so you were probably expecting something Christmassy as the next project. I guess you could tie this in with a Christmas theme, but, I think "playing with light" would probably broaden the shooting possibilities a little more.

Here's one of mine. The spotlights in my computer room :D (I used a star filter on my lens).

9 exposure HDR from RAW. That is about as much playing with light as I can handle.

This house in Randwick in Sydney's Eastern suburbs doesn't look like it has seen a fresh coat of paint from when I was a little kid, roaming the streets of Randwick.

I tried constructing the image with 3 exposures but the contrast range was too extreme. I finally settled on (needing) 9 exposures to fill the bill. I've kept the contrast relatively low, to give the image a flatness, similar to how an eggshell appears ... because the paint on the house is just as fragile.

I hope someone might think of an Edward Hopper street scenes and colours when they look at this image. If viewing Hopper's art has imparted even one iota of his subtle vision into my image making, ... not all is lost.

All in all a very satisfying play with light.

Are you going to share how you did it with us?

I set up the tripod and walked off the distance for where I would be standing figuring with F-16 I should be in focus.
Camera set up
2 second delay
15 second shutter (should have gone longer or more flash)
F-16
used a flash lite to write out my name
flash was manual at 1/16th power on second curtain sync,rear curtain for Nikon.
Remember to write backwards!
I think it was about 16 shots in twenty minutes. This could be fun the more you play with it!

The Rochester Subway. Locked a D70s open in bulb mode, then walked along the loading docks with a SB-800 and fired it off at each open door. Then did the same using the center point between two pillars. In addition to that, we had a fire going (yes I know, stupid having a fire going in an abandoned subway tunnel)

That is sooooo cool!!!

Here's one from me. I took this only a few minutes ago and I am so excited about it :D
I'm having fun with this project!

I metered my light using my in-camera meter and auto focus on the lens. Then switched the lens to manual focus to deliberately blur the fibre optics on the tree.

Constantine Manos, the photographer of the classic work, 'A Greek Porfolio' and also Magnum fame, once wrote (if I remember correctly), "Photography is the language of light, and it is upto photographers to be as articulate as possible." That is a nice inspirational thought.

I took this shot this arvo on my way home from work. There is nothing like playing with light with a touch of grunge added.

Looking up at the ceiling in an old church in Gent Belgium, light coming from all 4 sides. It makes me giddy though.

I was wondering why I all of a sudden, I had a sore neck. I then realized that I was involuntarily turning my head on its side to view your shot and it started to ache when I tried to turn my head upsidedown. I like repetition with variation in an image, and I now realize that I was twisting my neck to find the variation in your image.

A good shot from you too. In fact it is a very interesting shot. The placement of the yellow light at the bottom of the frame and the dark marks on the ceiling provides just the right amount of variation.

Thanks Alison, yes it's a great project theme, not easy though, generally need a tripod and capture the special times of the day, morning and evening. Requires me to think a bit harder about how I take my shots which adds for me more interest. Thanks and Cheers, Peter

Sorry I've got to add a moon too. First time shooting it. I guess a subject we all have in common and one that ties all our shots together (baring the sun of course)...deep...enjoy. S

I lost someone near and dear to me last month to cancer. This is a shrine I made for her after hospice was called in. It's a picture of us, our favorite music, a gift she gave me an many things from our church that bring us comfort.

Jeta, nice shots, I particularly like the first one.

Went back to the train station tonight to try out the fisheye lens with high speed trains. Caught this shot with a train coming out from a bridge. What I like is the color, the fisheye effect and the trailing white light while the green drops off with the train still partially under the bridge.

Oh here is the bridge the trains come from, and the other shot is where they are headed. The sheen on the platform is the ice. It's cold and wet. What we do for that elusive shot.
