    Windows Vista Cheats at Chess

Some co-workers were playing with a new computer loaded with Windows Vista, and they were playing chess. Several times the computer made an illegal move and captured a pawn. The computer would cross diagonally in front of an opposing pawn and make the capture. I guess I know what the first service pack will fix.

Dislaimer: The following is meant as pure sarcasm. Any similarity to actual service technicians, either living or dead, is purely coincidental.

[sarcasm] I've contacted several Windows™ service technicians about your problem and they have assured me that there cannot possibly be anything wrong with the new operating system. According to them, you simply have not yet learned the rules of "Vista Chess".[/sarcasm]rrr:

Maybe I'm not following your description correctly, and I'm certainly no chess master, but I thought the only way a pawn can capture a piece is with a diagonal move... You mean something else?

That's what I was thinking too.

You are quiet right but the capture that I saw was pass the pawn and just in front of the captured pawn, if that makes since. The capture was one block ahead of a legal capture. In other words the pawns were side by side at capture. The computer moved in front of the catured pawn instead of taking his space, if that is clear???

Unless I'm mistaken, that computer performed a legal move. It's called enpassant. When a piece deliberately is moved (usually a pawn) in its initial movement to avoid capture by the opponents pawn to a position adjacent to that pawn, the opponents pawn may cross over the space directly behind the piece and capture it. Does that describe the move you observed?

Ah, yes... I remember that... Doesn't the move have to be made immediately after the pawn attempts to bypass?

Re: Windows Vista Cheats at Chess

At one time pawns could only ever move one square. When the pawn was allowed to move 2 squares in its first move (to speed up the opening) it was realised that moving 2 squares could enable the pawn to evade capture. Hence the en passant move ("in passing"). From the description it sounds legal.

Re: Windows Vista Cheats at Chess

en passant is what I thought of right off too. If your pawn has achieved the fifth rank and your opponent moves a pawn to squares,(his 4th rank), your pawn can take him with a diagonal move as if he had only moved one rank.
