AVG anti virus is free. - for spyware and such Spybot Search and Destroy

i would suggest buying some antivirus - trend micro is excellent and so is PCCillin - i would suggest staying away from McAfee due to past problem - norton can bbe good, but their "personal" editions tend to be slow in terms of system performance.
