    Question on Lightroom 1.1 update

So I just downloaded and installed the Lightroom 1.1 upgrade. First off, THANK YOU ADOBE for the sharpening upgrade. Much better My question is what exactly was updated with Image Management? I took a look online to see specifics but, found nothing. Just says "flexible image management for multi-computer workflows". Anybody know the details?

Interesting. I will take a look. I have a three computer workflow and would love to know if they've done something to make it work better.

What have they done to improve sharpening? I don't really use Lightroom for sharpening. But I'm curious.

Have you posted a review for Lightroom yet? We could use your review.

Re: Question on Lightroom 1.1 upgrade

Hi John, no, I'm sorry, I haven't put together my review on Lightroom yet I'll sit down tonight and start writing one out.

They upgradd both the sharpening and the noise reduction capabilities. The noise reduction is still just the luminance and color sliders but, I haven't played around to see the changes in the output. The most obvious change comes with the sharpening. Instead of just have the single Sharpening slider like before, we now have controls/sliders for sharpening amount, radius, detail and masking! I did play around with these a little last night and it's a big improvement over before. I'll have to search through the Adobe forums tonight when I get more time to see what the image management upgrades were. They also changed the layout/appearance of the right hand "toolbar" in Library. Though until this point I haven't really been playing too much with metadata tagging so I didn't notice if any other changes were made other than appearance.

Re: Question on Lightroom 1.1 upgrade

Adobe has effectively added USM to the Lightroom.

There are more sorting options (via the click on everything design) and it looks like they have improved the multiple source storage databasing, though don't quote me and I've got to see what else it is doing 'better'.

Noise reduction seem to be more aggressive across the scale and better parametirzed for red/green issues. Again I've got to sit down and really look at it.

Lightroom is becoming more and more where I do the vast majority of my post processing.

We still need better watermarking and maybe a text tool.

Thanks drg. I don't have a multiple storage spaces set-up yet. A couple externals are next up on my list. Please let me know what you find out though for the updates on that as I hope to get something set-up soon myself.

+1 for that, especially the text tool. The identity plate option just doesn't cut it.

I'm with you in that now that I'm getting more familiar with Lightroom I almost never use Photoshop anymore. Unless I want to do something drastic, I do all my editing and resizing in Lightroom now.

    Lightroom - grrrrr
Once I got beyond 45000 images in the library, it all got very very slow.
Plus it's failing (gracefully) and displaying "out of memory" upside down and backwards instead of my pictures.

I still love it despite what it does to me.

Getting that bad on you Paul? I thought I saw someplace about how proud they were because there were people with 100k+ with no problems... They must have had some crazy server set-up or something. Just curious, if you don't mind me asking, what kind of computer set-up are you running right now?

Re: Question on Lightroom 1.1 update

PC World support page - geeks only

    Patriot 3440E
    Intel® Pentium® 4 550 Prescott (3.4 Ghz)
2G of PC3200 DDR RAM is the max it takes, I have maxxed it out

Has 2x 250G internal drives, C: for programs, D: for data where the LR library lives.
    - drives upgraded to 250G after both original drives failed

Main disk is 3TB NAS across the house 1Gbit LAN, with RAID5 capacity is 2TB.
    - network card upgraded to 1Gbit from original 10/100

    Lite-On® SOHW-1633S DVDRW
    Lite-On® SOHD-167T DVD drive

    ATi® Radeon™ 9250 256MB
    AverMedia A771 DVB-T TV-Tuner
    Realtek AC'97 audio

I import images from their original location.
All images are therefore across the NAS.

    There was a bug
in the previous Canon support library that resulted in images on UNC paths not being loaded correctly. That crippled Thumbs+ and LightRoom until I installed the latest Thumbs+ camera raw library that fixed the problem.
Now I don't need to slow it down by mapping all network access through a drive letter.

Paul I took a look through your PC World Support page and under hardware it's only showing 512mb of RAM??? Could there be some sort problem with the RAM you have installed?

Re: Question on Lightroom 1.1 update

Nope, it's PC3200 bought from PC World themselves.
The original RAM was actually 2x512 to give 1G, special deal

Oh, okay. I thought at first that the PC World link was a diagnostic showing your current set-up. So when you said 2GB and that said 512mb thought that might have been your prob right there...LOL

Re: Question on Lightroom 1.1 update

Paul, I just got done going through the Luminous Landscape tutorial update for 1.1, amongst MANY additions to 1.0 is a catalog optimization function for "If your catalog is large and running slowly...". Using it on even my small catalog made a fairly noticeable improvement in speed. Might be worth trying on yours to see if it helps. It's under Catalog Settings in the File drop down menu.
