Q.. epson 4870 vs minolta scan dual IV?

i have a need for either or both - flatbed or film scanner. i have some (limited number) of prints w/o negatives. and occassional need for a flat scan of some document or other. also lot of old slides/negatives i'd like to digitize for photoshop, home printing or whatever. probably a 10% / 90% split on that... i'm looking to spend $500 or so. i notice the relatively high dynamic range of the epson 4870, of course. will the scans be comparable? for b/w? or should i go with a dedicated film scanner and a cheap (less important quality issues) flatbed? sorry if this has been asked.. has anyone here examined the quality of scans each of these pieces of $500 hardware produce, (or is there something better these days?)

I have been using the 4870 for about ten months now. I was in the same spot you are and find the 4870 does a great job. I have to use both digital and film in my work (Marine Survey and documentation) and the 4870 gives great results in both modes (film and photo)

    Hope this helps,

I've seen a few comparisons between the 4870 and some dedicated film scanners. If you're only working with 35mm, then - from what I've seen, not personal experience - you'll probably be better with a film scanner. Then add an inexpensive flatbed for documents.

If you work with medium format or large format as well, and don't need the highest quality 35mm prints and/or very large, then the 4870 might be the answer.

One thing to note - Epson has a replacement coming out in the Spring for this scanner. It's got an even higher dynamic range too. Check out the News and Rumors forum for some info on it, can't remember the new model number.
