Picture Project

I am at a loss as to what happens when you edit a photograph. According to what you see in the programme there is an 'original' and a 'current'. I guess that means a secondory file is created. But where is it? And if you transfer the original to a CD, Picture Project seems to lose the edited version altogether.

Could somebody explain how it works, please?

Here's what Nikon has to say from their web site:

"All changes are automatically saved as a separate image. Users can always return to the original image by hitting the reset button."

There is probably a file containing the edits in the same directory as your photo, but it may be hidden. Or, if it's an actual image file, is it possible that you need to save it? If you saved it, are you 100% positive you saved it where you think you saved it?

I know with Picasa (similar type of software package) they save the edits applied to a given picture in a separate picasa file. You can see the file, but I've never tried to parse it. I've also never tried to save an edited Picasa photo as a separate image.

I just loaded Picture Project last night in order to try and work in RAW, which I had taken earlier in the day. I'm working with it totally by feel, with a few peeks into the support manual, (which is on a CD, which I hate).

If you check out the 'markers' tab in the right-hand section of the screen, this is their version of 'save as'. If you edit a photo and want to keep it (as well as the original), add a 'marker' - give it a name, and then it's stored in the 'marker' tab area. You then have markers called 'original', the one you just named, and another named 'current', which is your editing so far.Only one version will show as a thumbnail in the work space, but if you open the photo for editing, you can open the marker tab and click on any of versions you have added, including the original.

That's what I've figured out so far. The rest is still a mystery to me! I need to figure out how to simply 'save as a jpeg'!

Has anyone else used PP? It came with a free trial of Capture as well, but I haven't looked at that yet (gotta find it!).

I tried Nikon Picture Project, and didn't like it. I much prefer their Nikon View package for simple things (and of course viewing). So sorry, I can't answer your question.

However, I do work in Nikon Capture. What file format are you working in. If RAW, then Nikon Capture saves all steps done to the RAW file such that you can go back to the original if desired. Maybe they did the same thing in Picture Project.

Yes - they have. I learned a little more today, including how to save the files as jpgs for other uses. Each edit is automatically saved, as well as the original.

Supposedly a trial version of Capture was included on my disc, but I havent't looked for it or tried it yet. I imagine it's more powerful than PP.
