    I need a card reader

Can someone recommend a card reader? There are so many out there.

I need it to accomodate xD and CF Extreme IV. It's for a PC.

    Hi,

First of all, think about the following points:

#1. Would you be satisfied with a card reader that only accomodates those two types of memory cards?
#2. Or do you want an “all-in-one”?
#3. How about getting two separate readers?
#4. Firewire or USB? Firewire is faster, but also more expensive than USB.
#5. Note the OS and specs of your computer.(This is important, to ensure compatibility between reader & PC).
#6. Lastly, set up a budget. What is the maximum amount of money that you are willing to spend?

These 6 points should quickly narrow down the list. The next step is to examine the product, find a seller and decide whether you will buy online or at a store.

1,2. I only have these two types of memory cards although my wife's camera takes SD cards. It would be nice if the reader also could accept SD cards but it's not a priority. She usually prints right from the card. All in one is not really necessary especially if it affects cost/quality.
    3. If that's the best solution I don't have a problem with it, but I would think it wouldn't be cost effective. Maybe it is.
    4. USB
    5. Pentium Core Duo Windows XP, 2 GB RAM
    6. Less than $100

Would this one work for you?

~It's compatible with most memory cards, including CF, xD picture and Secure Digital.
~The price is under $20 USD.

There are several models that read all three types of memory cards. Find one that you like, each looks different. Make sure to read any reviews, too.

Make sure to read reviews, I have an old card reader that won't read modern SD cards.
I don't know what changed when, but the card access light flashes and after an age Windows says the card isn't present. Use a different card reader on the same USB port and cable and the card reads fine.

Thanks for the suggestion. That one looks fine and has reviewed well.

I was curious as to what others were using.

It won't work with CF or xD, but sure is awesome with Secure Digital.

Yeah, I gotta agree I really like those USB Thumbdrive readers. Very convenient. But frankly, any USB card reader will do as long as it fits your card. There's not much a difference that I can see. Maybe marginal speed. But that's about it.
