Monitor choice

I need to purchase a 19" CRT monitor for photographic work. I would appreciate any suggestions. I'm looking in the $300 CDN/$250 US price range.

It seems that CRT selection is getting pretty scant these days, what with the proliferation of cheap LCDs, and the CRTs that are good quality are still really expensive. I think that the best stuff in your price range is probably Viewsonic (G90 seems to be right about $250 US). There are some cheaper brands out too, but you might be risking it by going for them. Maybe you could pick up a used one, but again, that may be risky...I was a tech at a call center and we used Viewsonics, and they seemed to be pretty nice. I also have an older Sony Trinitron, but new Sony CRT's are pretty spendy.

I pretty much agree with you on this. I've got three old Trinitron monitors, two Sony and one made by Micron. I've been very, very happy with them. And I'd love to buy the high-end Sony, but I just checked the Sony site and couldn't find it. It's looking like it's nearly impossible to buy a decent CRT anymore. Viewsonic is the only company left that I'm sure makes good CRTs. I'm not sure if they're still making them, but Mitsubishi/NEC would also be a good choice. The last CRTs Apple was making used Mitsubishi tubes. Before that they used Trinitron tubes. I think the Apple monitors have always been the standard by which all others are judged.

Mitsubishi, Phillips and Sony are the best to get, look at the refresh rates, and the dot pitch. Something around .22 is really good.

I have a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 67TXV that I have had for a few years now and it still works perfectly.

You need non reflective screen, flat and as big as you can afford.

Really anyone moving up in size with CRT should be looking at around the 22" screen. Remeber you don't actually get 19" viewable area it is more like 17", so you have to take that into account.
