Help with monitor and calibration software

Hello ... I'm looking to upgrade my monitor from an Apple CRT. I'd like to keep the cost under $1000. I will be using this monitor mostly for editing & printing digital images. Can anyone make suggestions on monitors or tell me where (what websites) I can go to read reviews on monitors?

I'm also looking for calibration software for a scanner, printer and monitor. Any suggestions there (ease of use, cost, websites to read reviews etc.)?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ...

Nobody's jumped in yet so I'll try...

I'm using a CRT so I can't help you with LCD's. I've got a ViewSonic that's adjustable so it calibrates very well, but I've heard LaCie CRT's are even better. They're more expensive than a typical CRT but start out way below your price range.

I've got Monaco Optix XR which calibrates this monitor only, since I'm not doing my own printing. They also have a full version that calibrates the camera, scanner and printer as well as the monitor. Will Crockett's site has some good info on color management systems. You do have to register with your email address to read the articles but it's free.

The Dell 2005 is the same monitor as the Apple Crystal display and is color calibration capable. I was at a Rob Galbraith conference and he recommended this monitor for the price and the quality.

I've been very happy with my Dell monitors when used with my Eye One calibration system.

I am using an Apple LCD and I love it. It's pretty much a reference along with Eizo and LaCie. I never heard about the Dell 2005, it might actually be an excellent choice.

As for calibration I am using the Monaco Optix XR as well. I do my own printing and I never felt the need to have custom profiles for my printer so far (an HP 8750). These are not that necessary as long as the printer supplied profiles are good (which is definately the case with HP). My prints closely match my monitor most of the time.

The calibration with the Monaco Optix XR made a huge difference. It truly allow the get the most out of a monitor.

    regards

    Seb
