    Totally agree with Chunk.

LCD's have come a long way, but still don't give the true detail that a CRT does.

I agree...I had a CRT back home and it doesn't really compare to the LCD I have now. There good for somethings, but CRT's are better for photo processing.

No disagreement. But if you know your images will be viewed mostly on LCD monitors I highly recommend you use an LCD (along with you CRT) when adjusting sharpness.

    Re: CRT or LCD

CRT is still the best for Photography, either to screen or print. Although the much higher priced LCD's are starting to catch up and in some case are already there, but pricing is a bit high for the average Joe Bloggs. More and more LCD's are coming out with the ability to adjust the colours, temp etc on them, not just brightness and contrast and that is where they had failings in the past. There are many who use LCD's only now and have recovered their desktops. Me I just purchased before Xmas a Philips brialliance 202P4 which is a 20" viewable monitor, with a smaller foot print. It is quite hard to get CRT monitors as most manufacturers are moving to only LCD/Plasma Displays.

I totally agree with everyone this time. CRT it is, and I have an extensive background in video and television production as well as photography.

    Ronnoco,

Not to be nosy or confrontational but you sure sound like you have a padded resume. I'm just curious what you do with everything you've got (video/tv and literature/linguistics). I'm just curious what type of job that gets you with that combination.

    Again, just curious, not confrontational

Valid question actually. My background is rather unusual. My mother got me into photography at an early age..11 and into competition with the National Association of Photographic Art when I was in high school I actually ended up competing against my mother nationally in the area of scenics and creative photography and won some awards.

Academically, I studied Latin, French, German, and Spanish languages and French, German and Russian Literature at the University level for my degree. I then did Film and Video Production at Community College and got technician credentials. I also got my teachers certificate at another institution and my permanent license to teach.

At one time I had 5 jobs including teaching, photography, television and video production, and doing presentations in two languages throughout my province. I was making over $200 per hour (take home) at one point. I taught French, Television Production, Computer Animation and special programs for super intelligent students. I became a media consultant directing and producing productions that involved hands on photography, video camera work, multi-track audio, and computer animation. I also scripted a few programs for live television and then directed them.

I am currently spending a lot of time, looking after my son who was critically injured in a major highway head-on collision and requires a lot of therapy and supervision.

Absolutely no offense taken by your curiousity because my background and experiences are rather different to say the least.

    Cheers!

Wow Ronnoco, very extensive, and sorry to hear about your son. I know everyone will say the same but hope he gets better, but realistically head injuries go one way or the other, I have an extensive Nursing Backgound which you probably wouldn't be aware of. Good luck with it all.

    Re: CRT or LCD

This will be a mute point in a year or two but much likely much sooner. It's very hard to find CRTs that are inexpensive and of high quality, The CRTs are going the way of vinyl records.

    Re: CRT or LCD

I am in the CRT camp myself. It is not hard to find them if you know where to look. However, I am slowly making the move to LCD. I just acquired a Dell 2001FP 20.1-inch Flat Panel LCD, and I am about to switch over to it on my desktop computer. So I am leaning toward the LCD camp, but ATM I am still using my Viewsonic CRT.

Also I have been editing my Images on an iBook for the last few months. The main problem I have seen is that the images sometimes come out a little to dark on CRT's because the LCD is brighter, it can be difficult to compensate for that, but that's the price for being a part of what's new. I mean, somebody had to be the first digital photographer, right?

Very interesting, definately a unique combo, but seems very interesting nonetheless.

Thanks, and by the way, check your PM's.

Thanks Peter! I am considering a new twist in my career toward neural psychiatry or law since I have been forced to learn a lot in both these areas.

    Thanks everyone!

Peter i will check out the model you purchased.

Looks like CRT for now and LCD in the future - which is ok since hopefully pricing will come down on the big LCD's.

thanks again everyone - this board proves its worth in real info and $$ saved again!

In 5yrs. you will be lucky to find a CRT at Goodwill, move on, LCD is here, and CRT is fading into the sunset.

    A Better LCD

Generally, CRTs are the best for viewing and processing photos. However, there are a couple of LCDs that make me want to toss my aging CRTs. One is the Wacom Cintiq, which I've drooled over for the past two years at PMA: http://gallery.photographyreview.com...cat=all&page=1

The other is the EIZO ColorEdge, which I believe has a larger colorspace than any CRT. I might be wrong about that. And it costs $5000, so I'm not buying one anyway. At least not this year

Here's a link to my EIZO photo post from PMA: http://gallery.photographyreview.com...cat=all&page=1

I am seriously thinking about the Wacom Cintiq. I think the editing capabilities it offers are worth whatever slight tradeoff I might be making in terms of color. Plus, the Wacon guys told me it actually uses the same display that the EIZO does. But EIZO has developed their own sophisticated filtration system in order to display the whole Adobe RGB colorspace. I don't think either of my CRTs can do that, anyway. And the EIZO makes the Cintiq look like a great deal at $2500

    Good thread!

Fine advice John if you have the money, but I don't think the average photographer has that to spend on devices like that.
