Certain color look I'm going for in Photoshop, but cant quite get it.

I was shooting with pretty much the exact same setup as this kid used in his photo, but he shops them a little bit and I can't figure out how he gets these colors. Any ideas?

Just experiment. I know, that's tough, but that's all you can really do.

I'd suggest trying the Image > Adjust > Variations and choose a comination of adjustments with shadows, midtones, highlights, and saturation.

Also, try masking the sky and adjusting the levels on that. I do that sometimes to bring out the sky on some of my shots.

Great pictures are taken with the mind...the problem lies in getting the dang camera to take the same picture!

    Actions and Filters

It looks like a cross-processing filter or action to me. I tweaked this image using Photoshop adjustment layers. I used a levels adjustment layer to tweak the color - bumping up the green and yellow. I used a hue/saturation adjustment layer to bring down the saturation a bit. And I used a curves layer to tweak the shadows and highlights a bit.

    Try this:

turn down brightness, turn up contrast

    then

    Image/Adjust/Hue-Saturation

    or

Image/Adjust/Curves and play with with curves with individual channels. Looks like the green channel was messed with.

    or

    Image/Adjust/Variations

Somewhere in there you will get that effect.

I also want to add that you shouldn't try too hard to copy someone else's look. While it's a good exercise and you might like the style, it's always better to develop your own style. So play with it and see what you can do. But don't get too obsessed. It would be a better use of your time to take more and better pictures.
