Photoshop 6 is an older version of Adobe's Photoshop line of software. I doubt that you will be able to find it anywhere except for maybe Ebay. If you want some similiar software, you can get Photoshop Elements, which is a stripped down version of the most recent photoshop, for around $75-$100 at your local Walmart/Target/Kmart/Best Buy.

I'll bet that Elements (current version 3.0?) does more than PS6. Photoshop is currently on CS2, which is three versions newer than 6 (7, CS, CS2).

    Re: adope photoshop 6

Well, its rather complicated. Adobe has several photoshop programs in two main product lines. THere is full blown Photoshop, which includes PS6 that you use at your school through the modern Photoshop CS2 (the CS stands for Creative Suite, which is Adobe's latest marketing gimmick to sell more).

There is also a consumer line, which is a stripped down version of the full program called Photoshop Elements. Version 4 of Elements was released about a month ago. Elements usually incorporates the latest advances in the main line of programs, but comes in about $300 cheaper.

For more information, check out Adobe's Web Site at www.adobe.com.

Think of Photoshop CS as version 8.0, and CS2 as version 9.0. Personally, I think PS 6 would be a more advanced program than even the most current version of PSElements, but it's hard to say.

On the other hand, if you're going to look for PS6 on ebay, I'd think it would be just as easy (and not really much more expensive) to simply find a more recent version.

Each upgrade from 6.0 was a major improvement in the program, but truth is, if you're not going to be working in RAW format files, 7.0 is still a great version to use, and would have a lot more features than 6.0.

    Re: adope photoshop 6

It's Photoshop Elements 4 - Photoshop is a different "series" of the program, in the series that you were using in your class.

Either Photoshop Elements 4 (PSE4) that you have or Photoshop CS2 (PSCS2) will be a lot different from PS6. My advice would be to give PSE4 a shot, and pick up Scott Kelby's book on that program. Apparently it's not out yet because "4" is so new, but here's a link to the book for PSE3. It's an excellent book for whatever version of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements you're using, since all of the versions tend to change a little bit.

If you do need to upgrade to PSCS2,you can do it from apparently any version of Elements. Check at the bottom of the linked page, and for $500 it's yours. Actually, the total amount is less than the regular price of PSCS2, so it's a pretty good deal. Still, it's a lot of money so I'd work with PSE4 for awhile to see if you really need it.

    Re: adope photoshop 6

Since you are a student, you might be able to get a full version of Photoshop at a discount. I picked up Photoshop CS2 Primium for $200 with a student discount. That same program on the Adobe website sells for $1200!!! Not that you need to spend that much money on the program tho. If you curently have Elements 4, stick with it. It will give tons of tools to work with and will give you just about everything you will need to start your Photoshop learning adventure. I just ordered one of Scott Kelby's books last night, and I can't wait for it to get here!

I was just at a Borders book store in a mall on Wendsday and found the Kelby book I wanted. It was $40, so I put it back. I looked on the net when I got home and it was $23.99 at both Amazon and Barns & Nobel. I think you can get used versions to save a little more cash too if you wish.

The Kelby books are a great reference. Before I purchased the Photoshop CS book, I had no idea what I was doing. Since then, the quality of my images has increased 500%.

His books don't replace a GOOD photoshop class, but in the absence of one of those, they're your best bet to learning the program, IMHO.

Wow, 500% increase. Let me ask you: did you resize the quality using Bicubic or Bilinear resampling???

    Re: adope photoshop 6

Also, if you want to stay the Photoshop versions...rather than 6, you might consider 7...probably pick either one up for about the same price...7 has some nice improvements over 6...I currently use PS Elements 2. I tried 3 and didn't like it, I'm hoping 4 is much better...but I'm hesitant to spend the money based on 3...

Adobe should have a demo for just about everything. Going from one version to the next is a learning curve because of all of the changes - but IME it's always been worth it.
