RAW format is specific to each camera manufacturer, and sometimes to each camera.
Nikon NEF, Canon CR2, Minolta MRW, they all have different ways of storing the raw data.

DNG is supposed to be a standard for storing digital images in high resolution and high colour rendition, but its importance will depend upon its acceptance but software and hardware vendors.
