    Zion NP

Sorting through a few shots from last Nov when the leaves were changing. I don't think I posted these for review yet Anyway, have at it. I think they both have potential, but the yellow one is missing pop and the other might be too busy (but not sure how to solve that). The yellow one is showing a few artifacts in the sky there too

Certainly very beautiful scenery, of the two the first holds my attention the most although I am wondering if it may have worked better with more foreground, also without cropping the tree at the top of the frame...looks like a great place to visit and photograph..

GB, both of these are very nice. I love the placement of the sun in the trees in the first, although the overall lighting is hard it still has alot of appeal. I like the composition. The second one really works for me. Excellent scene and comp. The sky has a slightly greenish aqua color, but since there is so little of it i don't feel it hurts. Nice framing of the mountains in the trees.

    Re: Zion NP

Thanks Gary and Herriot. This is one of those situations where the photos do not truly represent the beauty I saw there.. the colors seemed more vivid.

But since we all process the visual information differently, and the smell, weather, sounds, etc also come into play, I wonder if these photos actually do show exactly what was there?

My take: there is a heck of lot of contrast in the top shot and it seems to overwhelm everything. What's left is mostly shape, in which I do see some potential.. but how to refine it into a winner is the question. The bottom one is nice but the yellow foliage seems without life or definition or variation., almost paint by the numbers :arf: I did shoot some MF film out there and will reexamine it to see if I have any shows with greater def.

    Thanks for commenting !

GB, I don't think the hazy mountain and background is helping here..seems like it needs more contrast for the foreground to play off of.
Please ask to edit photos and I'll do the same!
    Thx, Rod

Rod, yeah I tried a few different experiments - higher contrast, more sat, sharpening, etc. It seems that no matter what I tried it just wasn't right. I'll save the file and 5 years from now they'll have a PS function that you click and it will fix it into a super image

    Re: Zion NP

I think you did pretty good with difficult light.

Shooting towards the sun is always hard and although these compositions are nice the light just kills the overall.

I don't know but I think that the same shots from the same spots into the same sun with just a little bit of mist or clouds in the air might be a lot better.
    No, I DON'T need that.

MB - Thanks for commenting. I know these are low percentage shots (taking into the sun), but I can never resist trying. I keep thinking I'll find a way to even out the exposure and end up with an award winner I see what you mean about a misty sky: that's where the residents have the advantage of living there (I'm 500 miles from Zion!).
