Black or a constant dark coulour could be good with the right lighting.
I thought you'd done a brilliant job of alinging all the candles until I realised they are all joined together.
I'm sure that there are loads of angles that you could get great photos from this subject.
Hope you do re-shoot this and post the results.

Change angle and background, play with combinatoins of lighting, at the moment it just look like a circle of candles to me, not particuary visually appealing though teh objects do have potential.
