Honestly....the effect is far too strong on this one. The coffee can looks like it's floating in off the screen. This one doesn't "fit" as well as the beer cans for me either. I could visualize the beer cans being in an "industral zone" (I'm sure they weren't) but I can't picture this coffee can in the snow like this. It looks like it was placed there and doesn't belong.

I like the series though......what else did you do for this series?

    Gary,

I like textures here. The dirt in the snow actually add (geez, I never thought that I would say something like this...). I like how you composed the scene with the snow overhang and the tiny rocks in the lower right corners. Nice dof too. Overall, it looks fairly different from the rest of the cans series. I appreciate the fact that you can bring such diversity to a specific theme.

This isn't coherent with my previous comments but I don't mind having the brand in evidence here (perhaps because it isn't a big company that every knows, I can't say for sure). My only nitpick is that the can almost seems about to fell out of the picture which look odd as far as I am concerned. I guess that I would prefer the scene if you would have put the can further away from the overhang and perhaps turn down its saturation.

    regards

    Seb

Gary, I cannot get over how with every series your work seems to evolve and continually grows. This is an incredible shot. I must say that so far this will be one of my top favs in your canned series. The can looks so rich against the snowy background. This shot works so well because it is so visually appealing with all its little details that it's almost delicious. Fantastic shot. Love it, love it, love it.

    Re: Yuban!

Thanks for the comments . I think the only thing I feel while looking at it again is to slightly come down in the saturation of the can as to have it blend into it's scene more,, and not seem as if it is floating off the screen ( which is usually what I am going for but might have pushed it up a bit much here) thanks .

    I don't know Gary..
I SO like your "View From Within" series, I am not sure what to think of your cans one.
Have you been doing anything more with it?
And you have to desaturate it so!
I know this dosesn't help much, but this series isn't as good.

I know the other can shots have been staged but you made them look unstaged in a way. But this one doesn’t do me like the others. I can’t get past the staged feeling. It’s still a nice shot though.

Hey Eagle Eye, check out the post started by Nina that I think was started as a result of your comment. I can see some interesting conversation coming out of it. It's a good thing, not bad.

Getting back on topic here, I agree with your "staged" comment and it is a good word to describe the feel of this photo. It just doesn't feel like it belongs. A dry, unrusted coffee can with dry sticks, sitting (well floating as some said ) on top of melting ice.

I wonder if gahspidy was after a feeling of suspense with this one? I noticed it when I originally viewed the photo but forgot to comment or ask about it. Doesn't it feel like it's going to fall over?

    Re: Yuban!

I've been watching you post several pix on your "can" series and have been mulling it over before making another comment.
The graphic (words) on the cans are VERY distracting to me. Printed words demand attention in a pic. If memory serves me right, every word/logo/trademark in your last few pix are completely readable. That's just not likely to happen in the real world. The last few pix have looked (to me) as if they are made by a formula i.e., cans on the left, shallow depth of field, desat b/g. There is nothing wrong with having a style but some of these pix look as if they are the exact same pic with slightly different subjects.
BUT, that is just how I see it and "There is no accounting for taste. Especially mine!!"
I think that you are well on your way to perfecting this technique.
My very favorite pic was of the 55 gal drums with the subtle magenta coloring but it really doesn't belong in this series it is so different.

    Re: Yuban!

    Gary,

First off may I say that I think the composition is terrific. I love the feeling that the can is floating and almost about to fall into your lap as you watch the photo. Did it actually fall? The 3D effect is awsome.

However, having said that I agree with the other comments in that this seems a little different to the others in the series, but Hey, who wants to look at a load of pictures that have the same formula?

Did you think of adding a bit of snow into the can to make it look as if it had been there for a while?

Now the critique but -- I would have tried to keep the tips of the sticks/hay in focus so that they would have been crisp agaisnt the blured background but it could be my eye sight this morning or the LCD monitor I'm viewing it through. Will check tonight.

I like the nice crisp focus on the snow and the dirt in it gives it a lovely feel. Nicely done sir..

I agree with everyone on the words on the can but I also feel that they give the photo an advertising feel to the photo - not sure if this is what your after with this photo. If it is then not sure if it fits in with the rest of the can series.
After all that I like the photo a lot and love the 3D effect of the floating can and the suspense of whether its going to spill the coffee into my lap or not.

    Hello Gary
This one is far to 'unreal' (for the want of a better description) for me. The can looks as it was cut from elsewhere and pasted (maybe it was) whereas your other ones look as if you found them as they are (even if they are not).

    Re: Yuban!

Thanks all for the comments. I appreciate knowing what evryone feels about these images. Yeah, it was staged, as are most of them, but I am not out to make it appear as if I had stumbled upon these as they are. It is just for the visual ( pop art kind of feel. They do have a similiar concept, but that is the sort of thing I'm going for. I agree on this one it seems to be floating off the screen more than I intended and have redited to blend it in a bit more. Also, I think Roger mentioned about the sticks being sharp at the top, I left them sharp in this re edit. As for the can appearing to appear on the verge of fallig off, that was intentional and so was it's placement in the composition from the tilt to the stems breaking into the open sky. I know these aren't for everyone( maybe just for me) but i am having alot of fun with these. Thanks again

    Gary,

I prefer the first, no the second, no (Okay I like both) but the floating effect on the first is something else.

Keep producing them I enjoy looking at them

I LOVE this shot! It looks so, so, surreal. I prefer the saturation of the first photo over the second. Makes me wanna go out and find some cans.

    Re: Yuban!

Trevor, appreciate your following this and lending your thoughts. Nina, thanks for your continued support.
Seb, Roger, Dudley, Tom, Terry, Ray, and Shrackman., Brian . thank you for the time.
I think I will fall in between these two edits for the final print.
I noticed a few mention the words that are the identity of this can. There are afew reasons why I had done this. first, Knowing I wanted a contrasty image, and the can being a dark brown, I felt it would be the light colored label to help bring the can out as well as the highlighting inside the inner rim. Also, this subject was meant to scream for attention. . .to pop out of the image almost and fall into your lap Having the name YUBAN 100% Colombian Coffee!!! is exclaiming here I am. . and i'm proud so much so that it may just fall over the edge. Anyway. . .just entertainment. Thanks again
