    Yosemite Woods

From one of the various Yosemite scenic points. I like it, but don't know if it makes it over the top. Maybe if it was shot in October with the leaves changing - wow, that might be nice. Comments appreciated!

    Re: Yosemite Woods

Here's what I've come up with:

    Yosemite Woods-yosemitewoods1_px800-copy3.jpg

I think the big pack of snow at the bottom right hand corner could be distracting. This alternate version focus more on the - don't know how to say it - brown trees ("woods"), I also darken the top a bit for that purpose. Colors also enhanced a bit. This aspect ratio I think also go better with the trees.

Just my interpretation. It's different, not better.

Gb, I think AE's crop works but better yet, I think that if you shot this from the water up over the trees going for the top of the mountain with a wide angle lens would have been more impactful. It just looks too tightly cropped that I feel "robbed" of the rest of the image, if that makes any sense.

I love the reflection that the pond gives, but I also feel like a wide angle shot capturing all of the pond, the trees, and the mountains would have made an excellent picture. As it sits now, it seems cramped.

    Very pretty, though!

I think this is an excellent photo that really conveys the 'sense of place'. However, I would like to have seen what is above the photo's top border as the eye is swept up the mountains.

    Very good work though!

AgingEyes - Thanks for taking a whack at this one. It's different: a frame is good in general with this pic I think, though the cropping makes it feel (even more) cramped (as the others have commented with the original) and you do lose a lot of the reflections. I agree that it feels less distracted with the crop. What it needs (I think) is some snow on the bottom left too, to even everything out.

Gary, spiraleyes, taystar - I agree that this one might have looked better with the mountains (but then again, maybe not!?). One of the issues I have with digital photography is the way most DSLRs magnify your lens. With the Nikon D200 it's about 1.55 - 1.6 x the original, so my 24mm is now about a 38mm. Nikon makes several high end cameras that are full frame, but I can't afford them (and don't want the weight). Excuses, excuses.. Thanks for your critiques here.

I really like the photo. I do not like the cropped one because the reflection off the water is really precious..Secondly, the snow is not over exposed as whites usually are...If anything the colors look very natural...Also the frame on the second one seems to thick, to wide. If the frame were half the size I think it would work better. At least for me...

    Re: Yosemite Woods

J - Thanks for commenting. AE's border has merit I think, but I also agree that it's too thick relative to the image area. I also prefer the reflection even if that adds the distracting snow. But I also love to hear others' opinions on this sort of stuff (hence why I'm here).

What I did with the snow color is shoot with a little extra exposure (which is recommended in snow) but not too much. I shot this one on I believe + 1/3. A few others I shot at +2/3. Some came out too dark and I had to brighten them up a bit in Corel PhotoPaint. It's always a fine line between too much and not enough... glad to hear that I didn't overdo it.

    GB,

I prefer the original post with the reflection, it hardly looks real. I too would like to see more of the mountains but, hey, who wouldn't. Great shot, nicely done.
