Wounded Warrior....

Not all of the wounds that Soldiers receive while in a combat zone are from direct enemy contact, some are received from indirect contact.
This is a fellow Soldier and friend that lost his eye to cancer after serving in Afghanistan.

Technically, I think the shadow is not complimentary but as an image it is very powerful.

I like this a lot, Brian. It's a moving photo. You didn't have to tell us that he lost his eye to cancer. That changes the meaning. But it also speaks to your integrity. Regardless of the real story, the symbolism here tells about the cost of war and conflict. So in the end, it doesn't matter how he lost his eye. When you put a uniform and a wound together, there's a universal message that can't be ignored.

The shadow that Frog doesn't like doesn't bother me. In fact, it makes his hand and the glass eye pop out from the background. I guess that in a normal portrait it's probably something to avoid. But the rules are different for Holga photos and I think it's actually a critical element in this photo, because it makes the glass eye stand out.

This is pure power. Like Photojohn said the symbolism is what really makes this picture. You need to be proud of what this image stands for, there are many famous photographers that take photographs of wounded warriors just as you did here, this is by far one of the most powerful images of that type that I have personally seen.

The shadow also doesn't bother me, I think that it gives the eye something to contrast against.

The black border around the image takes away the focal point. Also this photo was not in focus which also takes away from it. I would love to see this retaken with the macro on.
