I can see what you're trying here (and, indeed, I use that selective desaturation technique myself sometimes) but I am not sure it works in this instance. Mostly I think because the colour of the wood isn't all that attractive or striking in it's own right. Sorry if that sounds overly negative.
Agree with Mike; the brown object doesn't stand out and not sure it would be that great if it did, cause it doesn't have any special characteristics (texture, size, etc). So the idea is good, but it just needs a stronger subject.
