I prefer the colour ones. the colour ads to these types of shot. For this type of shot to work, i think it has to be sleeker, less variation in the BG, like more of a solid colour with the swirls the only focal element. With more contrast and variation in the swirls themselves and not the BG.

Thanks for the comments. I guess its just one of those deals where I like the progress of what I'm doing, but it doesn't translate into a great shot for others. Yet, it keeps me trying.
Greg, you use the plural, are you referring to this shot and "Red"?
If so, it is a canon 50d with a 100mm macro lens, sometimes with close up filters. I fill up a rectangular shaped vase with water and just start dripping food coloring into the water. For "Wisp" I did a 180 of the image.
