    Re: wicked

The small version appears a bit dark on the ground/valley. But the full sized version might be a bit better. If you feel adventurous and have a tripod, try scenes like this, where either the sky needs overexposed or the ground underexposed as HDR so you can expose for both the ground and the sky. I really do like this shot, great composition and it shows the ruggedness of the valley well.

The sky is good and so are the shadows.

Yeah, I'm just starting with HDR but I've come to realize quickly its a very useful tool in landscapes where both the sky and the ground are important (as is the case here).

    Re: wicked

Thank you both, by HDR I assume you mean doing dual exposures etc? I'll poke around and read up on it, I think I'm familiar with the usual double exposure techniques, combining with layers etc, but not the HDR term for that.

I considered doing a digital ND grad on this but was to lazy at least for the initial post :-D

Something like that with multiple exposures is ideal but argh, hard to do every single shot with a tripod, though I do carry a monopod.

I've been considering purchasing a manfrotto ? monopod I saw with legs that actually can double as a tripod in a pinch.

    thank you again.

And yes you're right the full size doesn't so dark. I've never really posted my photos before. So far it seems like maybe the landscape style photos are some of the harder ones to do justice to the original when shrunken down.

I've been reluctant to tweak them further, after resizing down..for better or worse.

    thank you

They're too flat. You have nice composition, but the colors are too flat.

You needed a ND grad on the camera, or should have used a digital ND grad in post processing. A basic part of post processing is also getting the colour right and you have more of a black and white shot than colour, because of the lack of post processing.

Your photo needs a lot of work.

I agree with Ron on the grad filter, I got one on back order. Ron, You and Trog have got me convinced to try one.

On the subject of the resizing, you can always post in the gallery and link to your threads, since the gallery doesnt drastically reduce quality like the forums do.

    Re: wicked

that one hasnt suffered too much by not having a grad.. i am pretty sure its looks nice seen at its proper size.. to look nice mickey mouse size on the white background it perhaps needs some help but personally its a waste of time..

if it aint summer time and aint bright and punchy or black and white.. dont bother is my attitude now as regards posting anything on here..

some things look passable small some things dont.. a landscape like that is one of the things that dont.. there is no point at all in messing with it just to get a better critique here..

    Re: wicked

Hey thanks everyone very much all for the comments! Very helpful and interesting.

I thought about doing ND before posting but I'm only so adept at it was lazy, plus I don't think it will introduce such a huge change in this particular shot. But I will for myself or before printing.

Good point about being able to link larger from gallery Trog I think I will start doing that.

    thanks again! Eric
