Love the idea and the way you've executed it is just perfect IMO.

Thanks for sharing. This is easily one of my favourite shots that I've seen around here for quite some time.

forgot to mention that this appeals to me on a different level also.

To me, it's sort of like the shadow is even stronger than the insect. So "probably not this guy" is thrown out the window for me.

To me, this "guy" is terrified of his shadow and looks to be begging him to reconsider.

Loupey, I can't say that I am fond of insects photography but this is brilliant. You took it to the next level.

    Loupey,

Great shot. Love the title and a great mixture with the composition of the subject and the shadow. Well done!

Re: Who's Afraid of Their Own Shadow?

Wow! Thanks for such nice comments, everyone. I really appreciate it! I am glad that it had as much impact.

LeeIs, very interesting take on it - I can see what you mean though. Kind of like a child that makes a scary shadow only to be truly frightened by it himself.

This image took 20~30 shots to get "right" as it was a purely natural light shot among a host of obstructions (both for my shooting angle and light angle). In addition, trying to lock in the focus on a shadow is not as clear as with a hard subject. I chose this particular version as it fully brought out my intent of showing all the opposites - shadow within the brightness, the subject within the darkness, the negative (shadow) with its positive (mantis).

Perhaps I shouldn't ruin a good thing by posting another image of the opposite view (focus on the mantis). But here it is - I intend to display these two images as a 2-image mat.
