    White Horse

This was a grab shot on the way home, Looked in mirror, slammed on brakes, camera popped over the winsdcreen click then off again. Taken with a Nikon L6.

    Re: White Horse

    Roger,

    Hmmm.

This is a tough one. I see the potential, but it may be hard to bring out. Technically I think it can be tweaked. I think I would crop and turn it into a vertical shot, cropping everything from the left side to the middle or so out.. gone, poof!, then a little off the right side just so the horse isn't too centered. It then needs a bit of levels work. The bland sky's a bit of a killer here, but what the heck, it's England. Finally, sharpen a bit.

Too bad you couldn't get up a little closer and perhaps incorporate the horse with some grazing cattle or sheep?

    Re: White Horse

For the overblown sky, there is a trick you can use in PS. Create a duplicate layer from the background, then on the layer, select just the sky and adjust the levels until it looks right, then blend the layers until the line between the sky and the horizon looks good (e.g. like it has not been altered). Everyone probably already knows this, but you know what they say about assuming; so please forgive me if I'm covering old territory.

    Re: White Horse

Yeah, good subject. Too bad u didn't get closer and try a few different captures. The sky also sorta kills it for me also. That and the size of the horse. Also it looks like you were under a cloud while the area the horse is in is under the sun and that contrast sorta separates the areas.

    Re: White Horse

Thanks for the comments, I plan on going back with the 5D and tripod to do this properly when the weather improves. As I said this was a quick shot just to check what the view looks like. I made a note of a gate into a field where I may be able to park further on.

I will be down this way in two weeks time so will load up with the complete kit including filters.

GB - there were no animals in the field when I went by.

    StormGirl,
Thanks for the tip but the camera captured hardly any detail in the sky so not worth trying to do much with it. I posted it to find out if people thought it was worth going back.

I certainly think this is worth a return trip. Try a few different perspectives and see if you can get closer to the horse to really make it stand out.

    It's not bad, Roger.
    Needs something more though.
I like the leading line of the hedge, and the curving road.
I would want to stand in the middle of the road or even the other side.
So that the road is visible throughout all its length.
Bothers me that the bushes cover it middle distance.

    Re: White Horse

Aside from what has been said, I think this could be a very dramatic photo in either early morning or late evening light when the there's one of those golden light am/pm times and really great if some rays of sun were upon the horse.
Unfortunatly it could take years for that to happen just right.......or maybe tomorrow.

Paul - Stand in the middle of the road - that day I would be in Hospital  That road is very busy on both occasions I have driven down there. On that occasion for the short period I was stopped 5 cars went by.

    Frog,
Thanks for the depressing thought - It could be a millienia before that happens as I don't go past it that often

Tracer - I will be definately going back.

I was thinking of low sunlight, grazing the hill and showing the contours.
Depends on the geography though, may not happen.
It's not the white horse though, just a white horse.

Isn't that the truth, this is one of the 14 I know of, not counting the Men - I know of two of them.

    Roger,

As a potential for a really neat photo site this one has it all. Don't rule out an evening or dusk shoot as car trails on the road leading out of the frame might really add to this scene.

Also, I understand that a lot of these sites usually have a fair/festival or something, that is incorporated into the maintenance of the site by the local community. Checking into that as a source of activity on the hill might also be an interesting follow up.

I'll be keeping an eye out to see how the re-shoot goes. Good Luck!

    Hi Cindy

    Where have you been?

I am planning on taking a photo of all 14 sites that I know of and any others that I find. There will be two men to include in the list. However, because of work it will take me a while to get them all together.

That should be a really interesting project Roger, I wish you all the best with it. I'll definitely keep an eye out for a series from you.

I've been doing some major life changes and had very little extra brain power for critique lately. My family and I are moving to Asheville, North Carolina to open our own restaurant and music venue. It's been full tilt work for the last 8 months getting the house ready and selling it. Packing, planning, fund raising. We move this weekend. I've finally looked around and decided I really missed the forum so figured I jump back in when I can where I can.

    Best,
