what am i doing wrong?

I took this picture around 530 on a cloudy day. I took it on a tripod, took it from left to right, everything was manual WB, focus @ 1/80 f/4 with ISO 100. I know my WB is off, but i'm just practicing.I used my 18-55mm lense and zoomed all the way out. I used photoshopCS2 and did photomerge. Is there anything i can do to eliminate those lines on the sky. Unless if there is something i can do in PS, like patch tool or something. Thanks for any advice.

Hi flowremix - Welcome to the PR boards. That is strange alright ... Can you post the individual photos too? I would like to know if they're on the individual shots also. If so, you have a camera/image problem, not a PS merge issue..

I just realized that I don't have PS on my computer here (I do at home). I used Corel PhotoPaint's stitch function to do a quick test. It's not as lined up as yours, but the Corel isn't causing the diagonal streaks.

This really seems like a PS bug. I will have to try it on my home computer. Nice composition/horizontal image, btw.

A couple questions first. How closely were these taken in time? Were the clouds moving fast? Did you have it in manual focus as well as manual exposure?

When I am taking shots for a panorama I like to have the focal length around 50-55 mm (equivalent) so that there are fewer perspective issues. This requires more shots of course.

Every setting was set to manual...white balance and focus. It took me about 30 seconds at most to take all those pictures. It was not a windy day or anything either. The clouds seemed perfectly still. Next time i do a panorama i'll try to shot 50-55mm, cause i shot all those at 28mm, thats why i only had like 6 pictures to make the whole one.

Thanks GB1 for testing it out with your PS. I thought my ps was crap. I'll probably try using photostitch or whatever software came with the camera. Thanks for the advice readingR. I'll try it again on a better day.

By the way, GB1, i noticed you're from san diego too. I took this picture in the Rancho Bernardo area, Webb Lake Park. I was just wondering if it looked familar to you or anything.

Yes, I'm getting the same thing with my vers of PS CS2. It could be something like chunk suggested, where the clouds moved a slight bit between the shots. PS must have a hard time merging them at the transition points, using the algorithm they use, whereas Corel PhotoPaint probably uses a different algorithm. Corel's seems to come out on top here; however, it doesn't automatically line them up for you like PS does :17:

What can one do... Guess ya gotta buy Corel to merge these ones.

If these were taken with a Canon then try their own stitching program accessible through the ZoomBrowser that comes with the camera. It really does a good job for me

OK I have a theory.
This panorama is not straight and level.
If I assemble the images theya re stepped upwards about 1or 2% of the image height as you move to the right.

I see the dark bands originating from the overlap portion of each image (bottom example).
Using the "Advanced Blending" button on the right of the screen makes a big difference.

Now instead of long dark streaks from the joins, there are small light and dark patches that will be cropped out as you make a rectangular image from this (top image).


BTW - thanks for making me learn how to do panoramas in Photoshop !!

It's one thing to use a tripod when making a panoramic, it's another to have it perfectly level with the horizon.

Also at extreme wide angle there is alot more perspective distortion. Try a narrower angle with more photos and you won't have to do so much scew adjustment in the finishing process and the software may have an easier time. (Edit: Ooops, didn't read your other post you already mentioned this.)

If each photo is still in it's own layer, you may try masking the edges of each photo on top as it overlaps and see if it softens the line a bit. It will never be perfect but if the edges is softed enough and there is no hard line it will be a lot less noticible.

If you have flatened the image you can then use the clone tool and blot it along the line or use the smudge tool, that might work better.

Paul - The Canon s/w looks dead perfect to me, but the other two (esp the right one) look streaky. I think that in this situation, PS simply cannot produce correct results.

Flowremix - Yes, I live in Chula Vista and work in SD. At guessed that this might have been over there in Sorento Valley, near Qualcomm or SAIC... I was off by about 25 miles. RB has some incredible mtns.

Hey, if I were you I'd email Adobe and show them the results of the PS merge, and also mention that the Canon and Corel s/w did a little better. I bet they'd be very interested in hearing about it to try to improve their app (no joke).
