It's a preying mantis. Very cool looking bugs, but I have never seen one myself. I think your focus is off a bit. The back of the bug is sharp, but the head isn't. When it comes to shooting animals, and things like this, try to focus on they eye. I like the lighting, and black back ground. Was this shot with a black background or was this caused by a lack of light behind the subject? Either way, I like it.

I too have a 70-300 lens (Canon) and know how tuff it is to get a good macro shot hand-held. I have to be at least 4 feet away. Great job on getting this hand-held. Like the others have said would of been nice if more of the bug had been in focus but nice composition. Should still make for a decent 4x6 print.
