Hey Don, knowing that you like to make paintings out of your images and seem to go for a painterly/textured look in the images, you may want to try out Topaz's Simplify plug-in. I don't mean to plug a product here, but it seems that it would be right up your ally.

I think topaz also has a free program that allows it to be used as a stand alone application....checking.....yep. Fusion Express. Simplify it's self is about $30.
