    Westin

I took a camera to work with me today just for kicks. This is a shot of the Harbour Castle Westin Hotel at 7:27 AM (a short while after sunrise).

    How is my composition?

    Re: Westin

I would try it in portrait mode but hard to say without knowing what else is there. But then not knowing what else is there may be what I find difficult about it.
The sky and color of building, I like.

The composition is good, but I'd like to see more of the building, either portrait, or a few pictures stitched. (undecided about the contrail, better than nothing, but more dramatic clouds would be great, so if you get a day with clouds, reshoot if possible, cant control the weather )

    Jaedon,

I love the blue of the sky and the redness of the building but the vapour trail spoils it, as it cuts through the join of the two parts of the building. It may have been better above the building or coming diagonally through the picture.

I would also prefer to see this in portrait and to add a bit of the bottom of the building with more of the location its situated in.

    Re: Westin

    Hi Jaedon,

I like this shot, but I think in general, these kinds of images do better when you can see the surroundings. This image would work as part of a set of multiple shots showing the building within it's surroundings, but alone, it feels incomplete. I would suggest moving farther away so the base of the building could be included, and so the distortion caused by looking up at the building is minimized. If you wanted to exaggerate the feeling of looking up at the building, you could compose vertically, use a wide angle, and include the base. If you don't want to frame it vertically, you need to include the horizon or some other buildings for balance. As it is, the only thing that adds balance is the contrail, and it's not quite enough. The lighting is good and the colors are good.

Of course this is all just my opinion. I hope it's helpful.

The contrail is fun, but the whole image needs to be 'rooted' in something. Even showing the whole building would make appear to not be chopped off at an awkward place.

If you had a long enough lens and the proper vantage point, you might have been able to get just circular top of the Westin with the contrail as an underscore! That could be a really unusual photograph!

    Re: Westin

Thanks guys. Getting the entire building will be a bit of a problem as I framed the shot just above the plethora of power lines that criss cross the street at that location. Theres power lines and street car power lines and traffic lights and all kinds of other distractions. That said however I do know a location where I would be able to shoot from which would eliminate that.. but then there are a ton of condo's under construction behind it.

photophorous - I guess a series with the distractions and other buildings would make this image make more sense and make it look more attractive at the same time.

More dramatic clouds would've been nice (like this morning when I forgot my camera) but as stated above.. you can't control the weather.

I did originally try to frame it portrait style but as I said the wires and such gave it an ugly feel so I didn't even take the shot.

But since I sit at the base of that building for 10 min every morning waiting for my scheduled time to get my bus moving .. I can always try again =)

Thank you all for looking and commenting.
