    Webs

A gigantic spider web appeared in my backyard the other morning and I attempted to make the best of it. Here are the results. Your critiques are welcomed.

humm... the first two really dont do it for me. but i like the last two The webs look really neat, ive always had problems taking web pictures... but you've seem to capture it quiet well... i think it wouldve been more intresting though if there was a spider as well.

Hello, Quite frankly, I think that the web in these picture don't have the needed sharpness to make the picture "pop". On the other hand, your blurried backgrounds are quite magnificient, the colours and the luminosity in them is something. I don't know if you have used autofocus for these (or not) but this is the kind of situation were the autofocus of my D70 just won't work at all. Focusing manually and keeping a distance of at least 30 centimeters betwen your lense and the web should help a lot.

    regards

Thanks Sweet Deal & Seb for your comments.

Absolutely, definitely CAN'T do autofocus with something like this. Actually I used a 18-55 mm zoom lens with a Tiffen +2 screw on magnifier. Camera was at least mounted on a tripod but the wind kept blowing the web around. Since the depth of field is dramatically reduced from using the magnifier, it makes finding a good focal point very, very narrow hence the significant drop off and lack of POP. Guess I should have just pulled out out one of my big gun 300mm lenses instead and flattened the sucker out? I definitely wanted a very muted background because it's my neighbor's house and yard back there and a bit of an eyesore. Anyways, FUN experiment and I hope Mr. Spider sets up camp there again soon so I can give it another go.
