    Wavey Sunsets

Taken this afternoon on a wet, windy day.

I really need to find a better foreground - a steeple is what I'm envisioning.

I agree that another element would help in them all. The composition is fine in them all but fourth one which I feel is to centered. Do you have a DSLR now? I thought you shot film?

I think #3 and #4 have an adequate foreground, but to light the foreground properly you need HDR or a good old fashioned GND filter.

Like 4 and 5 the best. Think 4 is better since you still have the sunset. Maybe if you had a person on the rocks facing away from you in 5? Keep going back the the fourth one though...

I like these. I'm with EOS that an ND filter of a couple stops may have improved them some by balancing the bright sunset. But 5 is my favorite. I love the moodiness and grayness of it all and the clouds (or is it mountains?) in the background. What may have altered it's impact would be something with some extra punch (like a red rose on the cliffs, or a bright orange blanket, etc). But then again, as I said, I like the moodiness so that may just have ruined it all.

    Re: Wavey Sunsets

Thanks, ladies and gentlemen - some great observations and ideas here.

Greg, I still shoot film, but like everyone else who gets a digital camera, the convenience and lower costs start to outweigh all other preferences. I still have three other film cameras - two Nikon's and a Mamiya 645. Digital's multiplication factor (or whatever they call it) steals my wide angles away from me - that hurts the most - so I still shoot the Nikons, and I love the sharpness of the Mamiya.

EOS - I have yet to try HDR. Maybe I will this long weekend

Ag - Thks. I did shot one person facing the sunset, but it really isn't all that spectacular. I uploaded it here for your review.

D - Nice to see you're back. I need to get my NDF out of the bag and onto my camera! I think you're onto something with the props - sometimes you must bring your own. The rose sounds like an excellent idea. I think I'm a little gun shy using props, but hopefully that will change.

    Re: Wavey Sunsets

The compositions are mostly ok but the sky is just a little short of great hurting the overall. I also believe that you would have had better results with a split ND filter.

BTW I'm thinking a nice boat/ship in the water would be the perfect prop.
    No, I DON'T need that.

    Re: Wavey Sunsets

Thanks MB. Don't think I've ever seen a boat come in close to the shore in this particular area, but not sure why (probably cause there's no marina nearby).

I agree - it's a decent cloud formation, but not a perfect sunset.

    Re: Wavey Sunsets

I agree with most of the other comments, but I really like the reflection of the sun on the waves on the 3rd and then that last one. Too bad the sky's too bright.

I also agree on the props. I remember seeing a shot from a beach in Hawaii with a really colorful lei in the foreground. Without it, it would have been another boring beach shot (like the ones I take ), but that lei really made the whole thing come together. Although I'm not sure how you're going to fit the boat that MB suggests into your camera bag.

A mermaid on the rocks would work well ;-)
