    A waterfall.

Hi, I am new here. This is my 1st photo posting. Hope to learn more from you guys.

A waterfall in Malaysia. I took this photo during my recent outing. I did some minor editing using Lightroom 4. C&C are greatly appreciated.

    Nikon D7000 + Tokina 12-24mm + Marumi CPL.
    f11, 3 sec, ISO100, +0.3 step, 15mm.

I like the composition. With falls its easy to blow the highlights of the water and lose detail. I think you did fine here. Nice shot.

Thanks. It was taken early in the morning on a cloudy day.

It's well exposed and I like the motion in the water. My one suggestion would be to compose with your subject falling on a third of the frame instead of the center. That aside it's a nice shot!

I think half the battle in getting a great land scape is to get a great location this you have done but I have to agree with matt the tree on the left doesn't add to an otherwise really nice shot. Cropping this and a little off the bottom would IMO strengthen the composition. Also you could use the dodge tool to lighten the right side of the water fall a little and also highlight some of the fore ground elements, such as the rocks and right hand tree. This is nice slightly soft so avoid sharpening too much ( a fault I often make... )

Isn't it a cool thing in nature that the colours never seem to clash...

I have no issues with you editing my photos

Thanks for the input mattb and hminx.

How about this one? This is the same fall taken from another angle.

    Re: A waterfall.

I like the second better than the first for composition. While the first shot certainly has some nice parts in it, I think the best thing you could have done is stayed in that exact spot and re-framed the shot differently. It could have been tighter cropped or zoomed closer. My issue is that too much of the image is dark compared to the bright waterfall, even if it does contain good detail. What I'm saying is, I think your location for the first shot could possibly be better than the second, but you may have missed taking or seeing the best possible shot for that location. Sometimes I find myself standing in one place using my wide angle first, and I won't be done shooting that angle until I've used all three lenses total covering nearly every focal length on the scene. In such cases the best shot from the batch is usually not the shot I originally went to that location for, but the one that took longer to find. Hard lighting can sometimes help to force creativity.

Thanks for your comments. I should have moved about to look for more angle to shoot the fall. I guess I have to revisit this place one day.

The foreground wants more definition. I would layer blend it to bring out color in the front. Nice work.

    Re: A waterfall.

    Both are really nice shots.

I will start with second shot first, it is nice with a different angle to usual waterfall photography. You can really feel the energy of the water rushing to you, the impact is really that strong.

First shot, even though it is from a more classical waterfall composition, I prefer this shot more. Reasons -
    - I love the light falling on the main fall area, while the foreground is abit darker giving you in the middle of forest feel.
    - the combination of lighting and hidden shadow, plus the two trees, gives you the sort of "magical forest look".
Its personal preference, but I prefer the first shot.
