Walking on the Wild Side - some more (opinions sought)

Hi all - a few more animal pics. The first is a meerkat, which is an incredibly photogenic little creature. Also, two butterfly shots. Comments are welcome for all of them of course, but especially the last one. I know it breaks some rules, but I kind of like it, and it's a bit different than the usual.

    Cheers

Were the butterfly shots with a flash? Just seems there's some harsh shadows. Perhaps a blur tool in the right areas can solve that issue though. Otherwise, I think you've done well.

Good shots. The butterfly photos are verrrrrrrrrrrrrrry nice. But I agree that they almost seem unreal - did you sharpen them a whole lot or only a little? The middle shot seems like a painting........ Very powerful colors and sharpness, and contrast too. Amazing.

I dig the first one. This little guy is quite a character. He's literally posing for you here!

The butterly shots are extremely sharp and colorful but I think that your flash was a little too strong. The light is too white, not as natural as I wish it was. I think that the last one would be totally jaw dropping if the butterfly was hit by a ray of sun. Obviously, running into such a situation would be extreme luck! lol I really like the composition but I can't pass over the nature of the light.

The second is my favorite, good angles and clean presentation. The last one is the weakest IMO, not because it breaks any rules (I don't see it) but because the background is really busy and there are few lines to follow. Butterflies are all about the wings and the patterns, in that shot you really oughta come closer to see more detail since the wings are not the main focus.

How to tell the most experienced shooter in a group? They have the least amount of toys on them.

i really like the first butterfly shot. although like seb brought up, with the flash, creatign the dark shadows under the plants is kind of distracting to me, less flash but keep the same lighting on the butterfly and it would be an incredable shot.

btw what kind is it? i've never seen a butterfly like that where i've lived.

Re: Walking on the Wild Side - some more (opinions sought)

Thanks for the comments guys - I hasn't really noticed the flash shadow which, I agree, is somewhat distracting. Happily, I had taken another without flash and with a little work on levels and contrast, it's better I think. Also, I cloned out a couple of pinkish spots on the bottom right. I am attaching the new version.

I, too. like the second one Didache... The orientation of the butterflys wings is sort of mirrored by the leaves of the plant...
