larger DOF. you're blurring out the human aspect, one of the most important parts of any photo. plus you're losing detail in your brights. detailed grass though.
On the DOF, you could increase it or decrease it. Decreasing the DOF, the foreground would tell the story and the people would be a supplement to the photograph – IE if you had a focused baseball in the foreground and the people were out of focus, (this is an example only, not a suggestion). That being said, I don’t see the foreground being compelling enough to carry that much weight. The composition is good there just needs something more. I also am not crazy with the pole dividing one of the kids in half, (I realize this was a rushed shot). As I said this is a good idea and it has a lot of potential.
I like your idea a lot, I'll have to give it a try sometime.
The DOF doesn't bother me much although it would be worth experimenting with. I wish there was something in the grass to draw the viewers attention (but if there were it could turn out to be less interesting).
