Gary, this works perfectly well for me. I think that your framing is right on, so is the color rendition. This is a worthy addition to the series.

    What about that incoming show?

    Hi Gary,

I think this will go well in the series. The fist (that I saw) was kind of high-key, and this tone is a nice contrast. I also like how the compositional theme (for me) is (again) geometrically rectangular, yet there are (again) many complex elements. Nice job putting it together. I think the two will show well side to side.

I am, however, a little curious about what is above. The top looks a little cut short, but I'm not sure if adding more there would add.

    Cheers,
    Tim

Another nice shot Gary, lots to look at. If nothing else this series makes my place look neat.

Did you go inside to see if there was a 'looking out' shot?

    Gary,

I love this. I live in Paterson, NJ so see quite a few of this type of "subject" downtown. I've also captured a few here and there. I would be interested in seeing more of your shots.

The composition is excellent IMO, the color/tone and contrast are perfect. I don't see anything I would change.

    Good job.

    Gary,

Interesting shot to say the least. I love it and the tones are quite well done. However, the one thing that kind of distracts me from the shot is the brick pattern on the very far left. Other than that, superb.

    Well done.

Seb, glad you feel this is working on all cylinders. The show is the BWAC spring show called "Transformations". theres more info at bwac.org

Tim . .Thanks for the analysis on the pictures. You were right about the top being cut a bit abruptly. This image you see now has about as much as I could give.

Chunk . . you know, i never thought about it at the time, but looking at the picture now i wish i had gone it and attempted some view from within shots. the thing is, when I'm out shooting on the street like this, it seems that I attract so much attention and i feel like getting in and out as quickly as possible. Once a man came out of his door and demanded to know why i was taking pictures of his home. I explained to him and he looked suspicious and says" There are surveillance cameras all around, so just know you are being recorded" I mean, what am I going to do with a picture of his door. . .stick pins in it and make his life miserable? When i walk around with the camera, i feel like it is a loaded gun the way people react.

Liz. . .thanks for your comments. So yeah, you can appreciate these old gritty dwellings where you are too. You can see some more of these on my Website in the Single compositions gallery at the present. I will soon be creating the Urban Dwellings gallery and reorganizing the photos accordingly.

Jared . . .I appreciate your comments. I agree with you about the brick patterns to the left side. I will most likely subdue them a bit before the final print.

Your shots in this series are outstanding, and I hope I can learn something from them. I'd venture into street photography a little more, but like you said, it's like you've got a loaded weapon. Add to that the current paranoia in this country with surveillence, and I'm afraid if I tried that, someone would take a potshot at me. As an example, I wanted to practice my panning techniques on some kids riding by my house on motorbikes, but my wife was afraid they would think I was taking the pictures to turn in to the police. A sad commentary on the post-9/11 world.

I really like the tone with this picture and the series in general. The thing that makes this photo work so well is the open door...this would have a total different feel if not for that. Great eye on spotting this. I love all the grafitti to look at and the different kinds on cages going on in this photo.
I think this is a solid series and will do well at the show. It is different from most of what I'm seeing at galleries and really appeals to me. You work and vision is very inspiring to me.
Thanks to you, I finally have a series I'm working on besides just shooting streetphotography. It will be based on roads and how they effect the enviroment around us.
This type of thinking (series - the Whole) has started to really change my photography...I just hope to post soon
    Cheers,

I had to laugh reading this. When I go to NYC to do some street photography, I sometimes get self-conscious. One time I saw this man in Bryant Park in a long wedding dress with a huge white hat made out of veil material. He was sitting on a folding chair with his bare feet in a water fountain. I saw someone else taking his picture, so I asked if I could take his picture. He said I could "for a price" so I said I'd give him $2. He looked at my camera and said "by the looks of that camera you can afford to give me at least $20, but I'll let you take one picture for $2.00 because I have work to do." I had the Rebel 350XT with a 50mm lens. My hands were shaking by then, so I messed up the shot.

    It was fun though.....

And btw, I love your photography, Gary. I liked the other similar images to this one - especially the one with the cat in the window. It gives the subject some life. Excellent.

Gary this one is fantastic, I think next to the others makes a great addition to the series. At first glance I had to think if I was looking at the Chinatown series, or the dwellings... because it almost looks like a storefront with the crates, graffiti, etc. I like that your series shows the diverse dwellings in your area.
I agree about the top portion being a tight crop, leaves me wondering, but it works.
Space at the left again -I'm seeing a trend here- it gives the building some breathing room, detachment.

Awesome job. Congrats on the upcoming show.
