Mike the second version is much better to view. The first is a tad busy.

Great idea but I see several problems with the first image;
#1 Scrabble always starts in the starred pink square.
#2 It is a busy image.
#3 The straight lines of the board are distorted in the image and just look wrong.
I much prefer your second image. It is simpler, the point of view is interesting and it still has the same great ideas and sentiment as the first image.
